During a working session, the Cuban leader expressed interest in the health of Cuban medical personnel and their families as well as the results of the health cooperation project. President Castro noted that the international community is becoming increasingly conscience of the urgent need for solidarity in healthcare in order to stem disease in areas like Sub Saharan Africa where millions of people are seriously affected. Cuba's Health Minister, Carlos Dotres, presided over five days of meetings which wound up on Monday in Havana, when the leaders of the international missions of the integral health program analyzed the island's medical cooperation abroad. *CUBAN UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION ANALYZES "THE NEW MILLENNIUM" MEETING Havana, September 26 (RHC)-UN specialists, representatives of non-governmental organizations and other Cuban and foreign experts are holding an international UN seminar in Havana entitled, "The New Millennium: the United Nations and International Peace and Security, sponsored by the Cuban Association of the United Nations. Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister, Abelardo Moreno, officially opened the seminar with a brief speech in which he discussed the United Nations' current concerns in today's globalized world. The Cuban official welcomed participants and called on them to engage in active and profound discussions of topics that will be presented during the gathering. The event, which runs through Friday, includes presentations on different fields of UN concern, such as globalization, Washington's domination of today's UN, the Arms Race and globalization, human security through military interventions, and others. Among the seminar's participants is the Secretary General of Denmark's UN Association, Mikael Bjerrum, who talked to Radio Havana Cuba about the international event: "I think it's very very important to have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. In Denmark, when we discuss international matters, we always, of course, have our Danish angle on the issues and it is very important for me to be here and listen to different points of view from NGOs and UN people and scientists. Therefore, it is of enormous importance to hold seminars like this, and I am very grateful to the Cuban Association for organizing the seminar." Also present at the event were Mrs. Eryl Court, of the Canada-Cuba Friendship Society in Toronto, Professor M.V. Naidu from the Department of Political Science at Brandom University in Manitoba, Canada, Mr. Paul Hoeffel, Chief of the NGO section of the UN Public Information Department and other foreign and Cuban specialists. *2ND INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF SOCIAL WORKERS Havana, September 26 (RHC)-The 2nd International Meeting of Social Workers kicked off on Monday in Havana with the participation of delegates from Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, Canada, and many other countries. During the event, it was announced that the Cuban Society of Social Workers will now be part of the International Federation of Social Workers in recognition of the successful work done by Cuban technicians in the field. In Cuba there are nearly two social workers for every ten thousand inhabitants, at all levels of the island's health care system. *CUBAN VICE PRESIDENT HEADS MEETING OF MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENTS. Havana, September 26 (RHC)-Cuban Vice President, Carlos Lage, participated on Tuesday in Havana in the 6th meeting of the Presidents of Municipal Assemblies of People's Power. Delegates are examining the island's social and economic sectors, including the 2000-2001 school year. The Cuban official called on participants to help stop illegal procedures in the housing sector. A new law, which went into effect on Monday, is aimed at eliminating irregularities in house trading, construction licenses and the refurbishing of individual homes and apartment buildings. Basic Industry Minister, Marcos Portal, briefed Municipal Assembly delegates on the normalization of electrical service to the population, street light expansion, gas and other domestic fuel, which he gave as examples of the island's economic recovery. *GALICIAN CULTURE WEEK BEGINS IN OLD HAVANA Havana, September 26 (RHC)-Galician Culture Week began on Tuesday in Havana with the official unveiling of a wooden cross in Saint Francis of Assisi Plaza located in the colonial section of the Cuban capital. The cross was donated by the President of the Spanish autonomous region of Galicia, Manuel Fraga and was carved by a Galician school known for its traditional crafts. Project coordinator, Spanish Concha Fontela, pointed out that the objective of Galician Culture Week is to thank Cuba for the warm reception it gave Galician immigrants who went to the Caribbean island in search of a better life.
