In a reactivation of the massive protests that took place across Cuba during the kidnapping of Elian Gonzalez, speakers termed as cynical the U.S. government's policies that encourage illegal immigration. Demonstrators reiterated Cuba's protest of the U.S.'s Cuban Adjustment Act, granting illegal Cuban immigrants exclusive privileges, as well as the impunity enjoyed by those involved in the contraband of human beings in speedboats leaving and returning to Florida with undocumented Cubans -- oftentimes risking the lives of their cargo. The leader of Cuba's Federation of University Students, Hassan Perez, said the Cuban people are tired and outraged, and that Washington is violating the U.S.-Cuba migratory accords. The protest was convened by Cuban grassroots, labor and students organizations last Friday after the U.S. government granted assylum to a group of Cubans who had stolen a crop duster to reach U.S. territory.
