Out of the 200 countries present in the international event, 71 of them won at least a medal. For Latin America, seven countries won medals but only three took titles: Cuba, 11, and Mexico and Colombia one each. Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile were the other Latin American delegations to get any medals. The Latin American Olympic Champions were Colombian Maria Isabel Urrutia and Mexican Soraya Jimenez Mendivil both in weightlifting, Cubans Anier Garcia in 110 meters hurdles, Ivan Pedroso in long jump, Filiberto Azcuy in Greco-Roman wrestling, Legan Verdecia and Sibelis Veranes in judo, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Mario Kindelan, Jorge Gutierrez and Felix Savon in boxing, Angel Valodia Matos in taekwondo and the island's women volleyball team which made history with their third consecutive Olympic title of the decade, as well as Felix Savon, the only boxer in the olympic history that, along with Hunagarian Lazlo Papp and also Cuban Teofilo Stevenson, has won three Olympic crowns. Cuba also had outstanding performances in several sports disciplines. In boxing for example, in spite of bad decisions that affected the island's representatives, Cuba won the event with four titles and two bronzes followed by Russia with two gold, three silver and two bronze medals. In track and field, Cuba had its best performance at any Olympics with two gold, two silver and two bronze which meant the fifth place among 44 nations. In the 1992 Barcelona Games the island's athletes had also taken two titles but only one silver and four third places. Cuba also won the women's judo event with two gold medals and two silver thus defeating traditional winners of this discipline such as Japan, China and Korea. And in wrestling, Cuba's representatives were third with one title, three silver and one bronze, only behind Russia, first with six titles and the United States, second with one gold, three silver and three bronze medals. YUGOSLAVIA: OLYMPIC CHAMPION IN MEN'S VOLLEYBALL COMPETITIONS Sydney, October 1 (RHC) -- Yugoslavia gave one of the biggest surprises of the Sydney Olympic Games when that country's volleyball team won the crown in the competition for men. In the gold medal match, Yugoslavia defeated the favorite Russian team in three consecutive sets, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-20. In the bronze dispute, Italy beat Argentina also 3-0. Menwhile, in women's handball, Denmark revalidated its title beating Hungary 31-27. In the match for the bronze, Norway took a tight win over South Korea 22-21. In men's basketball, as it was expected, the U.S.'s Dream Team won the gold medal not without some difficulties after defeating France 85-75. The bronze went to Lithuania, winner over Australia 89-71. Finally, in men's waterpolo, Hungary took its seventh Olympic title and the first after 24 years beating Russia 13-6.
