Sergio Corrieri, the president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) -- which is sponsoring the event -- said the solidarity with Cuba movement is broad, varied, and heterogeneous. To date, a little more than 3,500 participants from 98 countries have confirmed their presence at the gathering, to be held in the Cuban capital from November 10th to the 14th. The first solidarity conference was held in 1994, with the presence of 3,069 from 108 countries. The second encounter was called by 72 Cuban social, religious and non-governmental organizations, among them the Cuban Council of Churches and the Martin Luther King Center -- both evangelical denominations. Sergio Corrieri pointed out that the international solidarity with Cuba movement currently publishes 400 magazines, newspapers and brochures. Commenting on the preparations on the Summit's final declaration, which will be held in Panama on November 16th and 17th, the Cuban official stressed that it is important for the document to reflect a respect of international law and sovereignty at a time when globalization and neo-liberalism attacks those principles. According to the first deputy foreign minister, the document will analyze the issue of children and adolescence in the region, particularly in Latin America -where 50 percent of its people live in poverty. *Viewpoint: WORLD SOLIDARITY WITH CUBA - "GLOBALIZATION" WITH A HUMAN FACE The most important aspect of Cuba's foreign policy has always been solidarity with the peoples of the Third World. In response, Cuba solidarity groups have sprung up around the world, supporting the Cuban people in their struggle over the past 40 years to remain sovereign and independent. The United States, just 90 miles from Cuba, has maintained a hostile policy against the island including an economic blockade that has lasted some four decades. Washington continues trying to destabilize the country by destroying its economy. U.S. policy has also been to internationalize the blockade, which has caused massive shortages of necessities, from food to life-saving medicine. The U.S. measures have failed to garner any international support and, in fact, have been roundly condemned as violating the principals of sovereignty and independence. Cuba's solidarity with other peoples of the Third World has been widely demonstrated, sometimes at the cost of human lives, since the beginning of the Cuban Revolution. Cuba supported the Vietnamese people during Washington's war of aggression against that nation; Cuba has been in solidarity with the peoples of Africa, the victims of colonialism and apartheid; hundreds of thousands of Cuban soldiers fought in difficult conditions in Angola and other African nations, helping them in their war of liberation against foreign aggression; many thousands of Cuban doctors and other medical personnel have completed or are now volunteering their services in dozens of African and Latin American countries. Cuba has extended full scholarships to thousands of low-income Third World youth, allowing them to study medicine, engineering and other skills necessary for development. From November 10th through the 14th, Havana will host representatives from hundreds of Cuba solidarity groups from dozens of countries, including the United States, who will ratify their willingness to support the Cuban Revolution. The Second World Solidarity Meeting will demonstrate the vitality that the Cuba solidarity movement has acquired on the world's five continents -- a fine example of the globalization of solidarity among the peoples of the world on the threshold of a new millennium.
