INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON DISASTERS UNDERWAY IN HAVANA Havana, September 9(RHC)-- The 5th International Congress on Disasters is meeting at Havana's International Convention Center. One of the issues delegates discussed Thursday was the role of the media in warning of impending disasters. A round table was held in which several journalists and specialists participated, among them: Lucia Neuman, CNN Bureau Chief in Havana; Cuban National television journalist Gladys Rubio; Joaquin Oramas from the weekly newspaper Granma Internacional and Alberto D. Perez from the office of the United Nations Development Program in the Cuban capital. During the round table, panelists highlighted the social responsibility of journalists in warning of coming disasters and the need to present truthful, accurate and timely information, rather than sensationalist news reports. Panel members also referred to the need to cover the aftermath of disasters and not only report on them when they occur. They said that, unfortunately, sometimes aid or donations stop arriving once the press stops reporting about the disasters. The good work carried out by Cuban authorities and the island's journalists in reporting on impending hurricanes was also highlighted by participants of the round table. ANA FIDELIA QUIROT'S LATEST GOLD MEDAL: A BABY GIRL Havana, September 9(RHC)-- Cuban track and field star Ana Fidelia Quirot has given birth to a baby girl -- named Karla Fidelia de la Caridad. The new mother, holding up Karla Fidelia for photographers and all to see, told reporters in Havana: "This is my greatest Gold Medal and now begins one of my life's most important races." The President of the Cuban Sports Institute, Humberto Rodriguez, and two-time Olympic champion and vice president of the institution Alberto Juantorena visited the Cuban athlete and called the newborn the "Baby of Cuban Sports." Juantorena wished Ana Fidelia good health and a quick comeback for next year's Sydney Olympics. The Cuban 400 and 800 meter champion temporarily retired from track and field competitions to have her baby.
