LOGISTICS FOR 9th IBERO-AMERICAN SUMMIT DISCUSSED IN HAVANA Havana, September 6(RHC)-- More than one hundred representatives of the governments of Latin America, Spain and Portugal gathered in Havana on Monday for briefings on the logistics for November's 9th Ibero-American Summit. The heads of the presidential offices of protocol, security and the press of 20 nations attended the advance preparatory meeting at Havana's International Convention Center which began with a welcoming address by Summit Secretary Pro Tem, Jorge Bolanos. The Cuban diplomat told the gathering that the Summit will be "the most important international event in Cuba during 1999" and mentioned that the Summit falls on the 480th anniversary of the founding of the city of Havana. During the two-day Advance Preparatory Meeting, a public drawing will be held to determine in which Havana protocol houses the heads of state and presidents will stay during the November Summit. This is the first time that the leaders attending an Ibero-American Summit will not stay in a hotel. Also on the agenda are tours of the International Press Center, protocol houses that will lodge the leaders, the airport, the Palace of the Revolution -- which houses the Council of State -- a special school and other places of interest. Deputy National Summit Coordinator, Ivan Mora, told Radio Havana Cuba that the island is making every effort -- despite its economic problems -- to insure that the 9th Ibero-American Summit will be the best ever. And he pointed out that this is the first summit of presidents and heads of state in Cuba in 20 years -- the last being the Non-Aligned Movement Summit in 1979. CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY DELEGATION VISITS THE ISLAND Havana, September 6(RHC)-- A visiting Chinese Communist Party delegation met in Havana with Luis Alvarez de la Nuez, a member of the Central Committee of Cuba's Communist Party. The delegation is headed by the Deputy Secretary of the Communist Party in the Chinese province of Shanghai, Meng Jianzhu. A group of Chinese business executives are accompanying the Communist Party delegation to explore investment possibilities on the island. Alvarez de la Nuez offered members of the Chinese delegation a broad panorama of the current situation on the island and perspectives of the Cuban economy. He told the visitors that economic efficiency is central to the island's strategy -- aimed at increasing positive results on the island. MAXIMO GOMEZ POLYTECHNICAL SCHOOL NEARS COMPLETION Santo Domingo, September 6(RHC)-- The Maximo Gomez Polytechnical School -- built with the help of the Cuban government in Bani, the Dominican Republic -- is scheduled to be completed within two months. The school, with a capacity for 500 students, will have enough space for its own food production, according to Dominican Education Minster Ligia Amada Melo. Cuban Higher Education Minster Fernando Vecino Alegret, who visited the school together with the Dominican official, said that the education the students will receive is linked in the country's production sector. The Cuban education official pointed out that the school is named after Maximo Gomez, a Dominican who participated in Cuba's struggle for independence against Spanish colonialism during the last century.
