The Cambodian leader thanked the Cuban government for the island's highest civilian distinction and affirmed that his country and the Caribbean island stand for the defense of the interests of the Third World. During the second day of his official visit to Cuba, the Cambodian prime minister visited scientific research centers and toured the Latin American School of Medicine located in Havana. PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERATION OF CUBAN WOMEN MEETS WITH CAMBODIA'S FIRST LADY Havana, September 10(RHC)-- The President of the Federation of Cuban Women, Vilma Espin, and other members of the FMC met with Bun Rany, wife of the Cambodian prime minister, currently visiting Cuba. The Cambodian first lady said she is happy to be in Cuba and hopes to learn more about the role of women in the country's socio-economic development. The president of the Federation of Cuban Women recalled her visit to Cambodia after the triumph of progressive forces over the genocidal Pol Pot. And the Cuban leader expressed interest in the social and cultural life of Cambodian women. Cambodian first lady Bun Rany is accompanying the Cambodian delegation, currently on an official visit to the island. During her stay, the first lady, who is also the President of the Cambodian Red Cross, will visit a special school in the Cuban capital and exchange experiences with members of the Cuban Red Cross. CUBAN FOREIGN MINISTER URGES EUROPEAN UNION TO DEFEND ITS BUSINESS INTERESTS Havana, September 10(RHC)-- Cuba has urged the European Union to defend its business interests against the sanctions incorporated in the U.S. Helms-Burton Law. On Friday, Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque referred to recent threats by Washington of sanctions against the French company Club Med and the German business LTU. The Cuban foreign minister said that Europe should support Cuba in the name of free commerce, adding that U.S. policies toward the island are a threat to international trade. SPANISH PRESIDENT CONDEMNS HELMS-BURTON LAW Madrid, September 10(RHC)-- Spanish President Jose Maria Aznar reiterated his condemnation of the extraterritorial nature of the U.S. Helms-Burton Law and said he supports companies that have invested in Cuba. Answering questions during a press conference in Madrid, Spain's president said that his country will do all it can to defend the interests of Spain and the right of Spanish business executives to freely invest in Cuba. Jose Maria Aznar stated that Spain condemns the U.S. legislation, calling it "a violation of international law." IBERO-AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN TRANSPORTATION AND PUBLIC WORKS MEETING SLATED FOR HAVANA Havana, September 10(RHC)-- Delegates from 17 countries have confirmed their attendance at the 4th Ibero-American and Caribbean Transportation and Public Works Meeting, to be held September 21st and 22nd in the Cuban capital. According to the organizing committee, this event will have more participants compared to previous meetings of its type. The main issue to be discussed is transportation and its infrastructure on the threshold of the 21st century.
