CUBA PAYS TRIBUTE TO SEVEN INTERNATIONALIST FIGHTERS Havana, October 4(RHC)-- Cuba will pay tribute to seven internationalist guerrilla fighters, whose remains were recently found in Bolivia. The seven fought with Ernesto Che Guevara and were killed in 1967. They are: Cubans Juan Vitalio Acuna (Vilo or Joaquin), Gustavo Machin Hoed de Beche (Alejandro), Israel Reyes Zayas (Br lio); and Bolivians Walter Arencibia Ayala (Walter), Eddy Maymura Hurtado (Ernesto), Moises Rodriguez Guevara (Moises) and Apolinar Aquino Quisten (Polo). On Thursday, October 7th, their remains will be taken to the central city of Santa Clara, where they will lie in state at the Jose Marti Library. On Friday -- the 32nd anniversary of the death in combat of Che Guevara -- the remains of the internationalist fighters will be buried in the Ernesto Che Guevara Mausoleum, together wi those of 17 other combatants from the Bolivian revolutionary movement. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE INFO '99 UNDERWAY IN HAVANA Havana, October 4(RHC)-- The rapid development of scientific and technological innovations in the field of information is being discussed at the International Conference INFO '99, underway in the Cuban capital. The event is being held at Havana's International Convention Center and is being attended by delegates from 25 countries. During the opening ceremony, Dr. Daniel Codorniu -- Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment -- stated that the poor development of Spanish- speaking countries, their late incorporation into the information network as well as the high percentage of illiteracy in many of those nations are some of the reasons why only hree percent of the information registered is in Spanish. He pointed out that the United States -- with 4.7 percent of the world's population -- has 26.3 percent of Internet users while Sub-Saharan Africa, for example, has 9.7 percent of the world's population and only 0.1 percent use the Internet. The Cuban official stated that this unequal situation endangers the goal of achieving sustainable velopment as long as only a few have access to information and others have absolutely no access because they cannot even read. This is the main challenge of professionals in the field of information. Among the issues on the event's agenda are competitive intelligence, the role of librarians, telecommunications and information units. INFO '99 winds up on Friday, October 8th. THIRD HEMINGWAY CONFERENCE TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK Havana, October 4(RHC)-- The Third Hemingway Conference is set to begin October 10th in Havana with the participation of scholars from the United States, Spain, France, Russia, Mexico and Argentina. During a news conference on Monday, the Director of the city's Hemingway Museum, Danilo Arate Hernandez, said that the event will explore the universal nature of the life and work of the famous U.S. writer. Ernest Hemingway lived for many years in Cojimar, located east of Havana, where his former residence now serves as a museum. The Cuban post office will mark the occasion with a commemorative stamp of Hemingway, and the Spanish Ballet Company of Havana will give a special presentation of flamenco dancing. Hemingway was obsessed with Spanish machismo, represented by their passion for flamenco and bull-fighting -- the very epitome of the machismo that characterize his life. The Third Hemingway Conference will take place in the Via Panamericana suburb of Havana and will run through October 15th, ending with a "fiesta popular" in Cojimar. THIRD ENCOUNTER OF IBERO-AMERICAN-CATALANO MUSIC GETS UNDERWAY TOMORROW Havana, October 4(RHC)-- The Third Encounter of Ibero-American-Catalano Music will be inaugurated on Tuesday at Havana's Amadeo Roldan Theater. The presentation is part of Havana's 7th Music Festival, whose final concert will be held on Saturday at Havana's Plaza de la Revolucion and the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, located in Old Havana.
