Accompanied by a large delegation of elected officials and health and industry sector experts, the governor -- who is the first U.S. governor to visit Cuba since the triumph of the Revolution in 1959 -- spoke with reporters during a visit to the Latin American School of Medicine. He reiterated his opposition to the blockade and added that he hoped there would be many more delegations such as his to the island. The U.S. governor said that his visit was one of friendship and goodwill. He was visibly impressed with the school, which offers mostly Central American students free medical training in an effort to improve health care in their countries. During his visit to the school, Governor Ryan was accompanied by Doctor Carl Getto from the University of Illinois, who said his experience in Cuba had been "incredible" and that the school constituted "a wonderful credit for Cuba." The delegation was accompanied on its visit to the Latin American School of Medicine by Cuban Health Minister Carlos Dotres, who explained the system of primary and preventive health care on the island. NICARAGUAN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY HONORS WORK OF CUBAN HEALTH PROFESSIONALS Managua, October 26(RHC)-- The Nicaraguan National Assembly has issued a resolution honoring the work of 85 doctors and 22 health professionals who are offering their services to the victims of Hurricane Mitch in Nicaragua. The Nicaraguan parliament issued a plaque and diploma of recognition at the request of a group of lawmakers from the Cuba-Nicaragua Friendship Committee, composed of legislators from nearly all of the country's political parties. Cuban doctors continue to treat victims of Hurricane Mitch in Central America and the Caribbean, offering their services free-of-charge. Cuba's integral health program for Central America is aimed at saving lives -- reducing infant mortality and preventing deaths from curable diseases. 4th INTERNATIONAL MEETING ON TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND COMPUTER NETWORKS UNDERWAY IN THE CUBAN CAPITAL Havana, October 26(RHC)-- The 4th International Meeting on Telecommunications and Computer Networks is underway at the Melia Havana Hotel with the participation of more than 300 specialists from eleven countries. Members of the organizing committee said that experts from Argentina, Canada, Spain, France, Italy, Israel, Mexico, Venezuela and Cuba will analyze issues related to the technology of information. 2nd INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON NUCLEAR TECHNIQUES MEETS IN HAVANA Havana, October 26(RHC)-- The 2nd International Symposium on Nuclear Techniques and its Relation with Agriculture, Industry and the Environment began on Tuesday in Havana with the participation of delegates from six countries. The participating countries are Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, Italy, Mexico and Portugal. The international symposium will offer the opportunity for researchers to evaluate the current tendencies and actions in the use of nuclear energy. GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE CONFEDERATION OF INSTITUTIONS IN THE REGION BEING HELD IN HAVANA Havana, October 26(RHC)-- The work of social and cultural foundations in Ibero-American countries was outlined on Monday in Havana during the inauguration of the General Assembly of the Confederation of Institutions in the region. Participating in the event are representatives from 18 countries and 800 foundations, as well as Cuban officials from different institutions like the Fernando Ortiz Foundation of the New Latin American Film and the Nature and Man Foundation. The Vice President of the Ibero-American Foundation Federation, Rodolfo Bourqui, thanked Cuba for hosting this year's event. IBERO-AMERICAN LAWYERS DISCUSS GLOBALIZATION, LAW AND WORLD ECONOMIC CRISIS Havana, October 26(RHC)-- The Ibero-American Lawyers Meeting will get underway on Wednesday in Havana with the central theme dedicated to globalization, law and the world economic crisis. The President of Cuba's National Lawyers Union, Arnel Medina, said that the event will allow Ibero-American lawyers to exchange experiences about their profession. CUBAN DELEGATION PARTICIPATES IN FIDES '99 Panama City, October 26(RHC)-- A Cuban delegation is participating as an observer of the regional Insurance Conference, FIDES '99, which got underway in Panama City on Tuesday. The island's delegation is reportedly the largest in number to the event and is headed by the president and vice president of Cuba's International Insurance Company, ESICUBA, S.A. FIDES '99, which is organized by the Inter-American Insurance Companies Federation, has over 20 years of experience and constitutes the most important insurance event in the world. The conference is gathering representatives from all five continents.
