The Japanese delegation -considered the most important mission from the Asian nation to visit Cuba- is presided over by the Presidents of the Japan-Cuba Parliamentary Friendship League and the Japan-Cuba Economic Conference, Hiroshi Mitsuzuka and Masatake Kusamichi. The encounter is further evidence of both government's interest in strengthening economic cooperation. The Japanese delegation's agenda on the island includes meetings with high-ranking Cuban government officials and the signing of bilateral cooperation projects. The President of the Japan-Cuba Economic Conference pointed to tourism and the basic and textile industries as sectors for possible Japanese investment in Cuba. HAVANA CITY HISTORIAN EUSEBIO LEAL AWARDED PORTUGAL'S INFANTE ENRIQUE ORDER Havana, November 22(RHC)-- Portugal's President Jorge Sampaio has awarded Havana City Historian Eusebio Leal with the Infante Enrique Order in recognition of his work to reconstruct the Cuban capital's historic areas. The ceremony was held in Havana's Captain Generals Palace or City Museum. Among the Portuguese delegation's activities during its stay in Havana for the 9th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, was the unveiling of a plaque at the Columnata Egipciana Cafe, a favorite haunt of renowned Portuguese writer Eca de Quiroz when he worked as a diplomat in the Cuban capital. WEMILERE'99 FESTIVAL OF AFRICAN ROOTS BEGINS IN HAVANA Havana, November 22(RHC)-- The 11th edition of the Wemilere Festival of African Roots was inaugurated on Sunday in the Museum of the municipality of Guanabacoa in the Cuban capital. This year's event is dedicated to Angola, as it has been to Nigeria, Congo and Mozambique in prior years. More than 60 Angolans have come to Cuba to participate in Wemilere'99. The Eduardo Dos Santos Foundation and the Angolan Ministry of Education and Culture have supported them. At the inauguration ceremony, Antonio Purrhuti, Angolan Minister of Education and Culture, thanked the Cuban people for their contribution to the independence of Angola and said that the festival will further strengthen solidarity and friendship between both nations. The Wemilere '99 festival will run through November 27. NEW BRAND OF HAVANOS CIGARS PRESENTED IN HAVANA Havana, November 22(RHC)-- A new brand of the world famous hand-rolled Havanos cigars was presented over the weekend in Havana. The new brand, San Cristobal de La Habana, was named after the Cuban capital on the occasion of the 480 anniversary of its foundation. The launching ceremony began with an exclusive concert by the women's chamber orquestra Camerata Romeu at Old Havana's San Francisco de Assisi Basilica. Havana City Historian Eusebio Leal made reference to the importance of tobacco raising and its influence on Cuban culture. It was confirmed that Havana will host the International Cigar Festival in February of the year 2000, which will include symposiums, fairs, meetings and the election of the Havana Cigar Man of the Year. INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE LINGUISTICS'99 BEGINS IN HAVANA Havana, November 22(RHC)-- Havana's Jose Antonio Portuondo Linguistics Institute and its Rufino Jose Cuervo and Catalonyan Culture Departments are holding the International Scientific Conference Linguistics'99, from November 22 through the 25 at the Institute's headquarters. On the conference's agenda: "Analysis of Discourse and Pragmatics "; Socio-linguistics and dialectology; Applied linguistics and Analysis of literary texts. The conference's program includes master lectures and round tables on language and the media, the teaching of languages and the effects of globalization. Among guests is Dr. Leonardo R. Ashley, President of the U.S. Geo-Linguistics Society, Dr. Wayne Finke, member of the U.S. Onomastic Society and Dr. Joseph Turi, Secretary of Canada's Linguistics Academy.
