TARGET YUGOSLAVIA: NATO's WAR OF AGGRESSION / Friday, 14 May 1999 Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit CUBANEWS FROM RADIO HAVANA CUBA E-mail: rhc@radiohc.org http://www.radiohc.org TARGET YUGOSLAVIA: NATO's WAR OF AGGRESSION Friday, 14 May 1999 Radio Havana Cuba presents its coverage of the ongoing U.S.- led NATO aggression against Yugoslavia. -------------------------------------------------------- ITALIAN FISHERMEN COME UP WITH AN INTERESTING CATCH... Italian Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema has demanded that NATO clarify how more than 200 U.S.-manufactured cluster bombs wound up in the Adreatic Sea. Italian fishermen found the bombs just 30 kilometers off the coast of Venecia. Last Monday, four fishermen were wounded -- one seriously -- when one of the cluster bombs exploded following the discovery of the first group. In the following days, a total of more than 200 bombs were snagged in fishermens' nets. The Italian fishermen have called on the government to determine whether or not the Adriatic Sea has become a high-risk zone. It's believed that the bombs were dropped into the sea by NATO aircraft facing difficulties during the aggression against Yugoslavia. But Italian authorities want to know why the pilots and/or NATO officials didn't report the incidents. The explosives are also believed to contain depleted uranium. AND THE BOMBS KEEP TUMBLIN' DOWN... The French News Agency, AFP (Agencia France Press), has confirmed another NATO massacre of civilians in Kosovo of Albanian origin, with at least 79 people dead and nearly 60 wounded. The attack occurred near the southern Yugoslavian town of Prizren. According to a cable from the site of the tragedy -- datelined Friday, May 14th -- an AFP correspondent counted 48 bodies in the Prizren morgue, most of them charred and dismembered beyond recognition -- including a large number of children. He also reported seeing three large plastic bags with human remains and was told by local doctors that 61 wounded victims had been admitted into hospitals. The same correspondent reported having found a fragment of a laser-guided bomb of the same type used by NATO. According to Serb sources and survivors, around 12 midnight last night, three bombs fell on a farm where some 400 Albanian-Kosovans had sought refuge. Bombs continued falling in the surrounding area as the survivors fled in panic, in an attack that reportedly lasted more than three hours. Eye-witnesses told journalists that cluster-bombs were used in the attack. The AFP correspondent spoke to several of the survivors -- one who said he had lost his two daughters ages 2 and 3, as well as his brother-in-law. Another 200 Albanian refugees in Kosovo were reportedly spending the night in nearby homes, some of whom were also wounded when several of those houses were seriously damaged by the bombardment. According to a Spanish News Agency (EFE) cable -- datelined Belgrade, May 14th -- with this new NATO attack against civilians, the majority of the human victims in the agression are Yugoslavian-Albanians -- the ethnic group that the military alliance claims it is protecting. EFE also reported that the attack has cost more lives than in the previous seven so-called `errors' that NATO has thus far admitted to -- including the bombardment of a group of Albanian refugees in Kosovo last April 14th that left 75 people dead. NATO spokespersons said today that there will be an investigation into the latest incident, but refused to confirm or deny whether a bombing mission had been carried out in that region. MORE THAN 1000 CHINESE-AMERICANS PROTEST AGAINST NATO AGGRESSION AT UNITED NATIONS More than 1000 Chinese-Americans protested in front of the United Nations in New York City on Friday, demanding an end to the U.S.-led NATO aggression against Yugoslavia. Protesting last week's bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, the Yugoslavian capital, many of the demonstrators carried photos of the three Chinese journalists killed in what Washington calls "an accident." The protest, which lasted for three hours Friday afternoon, was organized by the Ad Hoc Committee of Chinese Against the Atrocities of NATO. According to organizers of the demonstration, Chinese-Americans travelled to New York City from as far away as Chicago and Philadelphia to take part in the protest. In an open letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan -- presented to officials at the United Nations during the protest -- the coalition called for an end to the NATO aggression against Yugoslavia and stated that the attack on China's embassy in Belgrade was a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and the Geneva Convention. -30- [c] 1999, Radio Habana Cuba All rights reserved Articles cannot be reproduced, reprinted or published in any system without the consent of RHC.
