Upon his arrival at the capital's Jose Marti International Airport, Maraj was welcomed by his Cuban counterpart, Roberto Robaina. In a brief encounter with reporters, Robaina and Maraj underscored the importance of the visit. The Cuban foreign minister noted the "outstanding role performed by Trinidad and Tobago in the creation and consolidation of the Association of Caribbean States and praised bilateral relations between Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago. Ralph Maraj stated that the ties between his country and Cuba "have grown tremendously over the last few years." He said that he was very pleased that Cuba had recently opened an embassy in Port of Spain and said that in the not-too-distant future, Trinidad and Tobago would have a diplomatic mission in Havana. During his three-day visit to Cuba, Maraj and Robaina will sign an investment protection and promotion agreement, two agreements of cooperation in agriculture and another dealing with cooperation in the fight against drug-trafficking. The visiting delegation from Trinidad and Tobago will also hold meetings with the Ministers of Cooperation and Foreign Investment, Foreign Trade and Basic Industries, as well as visit the newly launched Latin American School of Medicine here in the Cuban capital. The visit of the foreign minister and his accompanying delegation from Trinidad and Tobago is scheduled to wind up on Thursday. CUBA ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE LATIN AMERICAN OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY ASSOCIATION FOR CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS Havana, May 24(RHC)-- Cuba was elected President of the Latin American Obstetrics and Gynecology Association for Children and Teenagers during the closing of its 6th Congress in Havana. The President of the Cuban Society's Youth and Children Sector, Dr. Jorge Pelaez, will chair the Latin American Association. The organization's next congress is scheduled for Buenos Aires, the Argentinean capital, in the year 2000. ARGENTINEAN BUSINESS DELEGATION ARRIVES ON THE ISLAND Havana, May 24(RHC)-- A commercial delegation, organized by Argentina's Business Development Institute, has arrived in Havana to explore bilateral business opportunities. The group is composed of representatives from the communications, telephone, food, chemical products, and paper sectors. During their stay, the Argentinean business delegation will be hosted by Cuba's Chamber of Commerce. SALVADORANS SCHEDULED TO HAVE KIDNEY TRANSPLANTS IN CUBA Tegucigalpa, May 24(RHC)-- Five Salvadoran citizens will undergo kidney transplants in Cuba as part of a cooperation agreement which will soon be signed between both countries' health ministries. Honduran Deputy Health Minister Jose Manuel Mateu told reporters that kidney transplants are performed in his country, but cost around 11,000 dollars -- too expense for many patients. Cuba has sent several medical brigades to Honduras to offer their services free-of-charge to the victims of Hurricane Mitch. In addition, some 300 Honduran youths recently began studying medicine on the island as part of a scholarship program offered by the Cuban government to Central American and Caribbean nations. CUBAN HEALTH MINISTER ANNOUNCES PLAN TO AID CENTRAL AMERICAN NATIONS Geneva, May 24(RHC)-- Cuban Health Minister Carlos Dotres said that there are currently some 100,000 Cuban doctors and technicians in the most remote areas of Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Belize and Haiti. Dotres, who made the announcement during the 52th meeting of the World Health Organization, offered details on the island's Integral Health Plan to aid Central American nations devastated by last year's Hurricane Mitch. The Cuban official stated that the island's health professionals could annually save as many lives as were lost during the hurricane, including the lives of at least 25,000 children under the age of five. Cuba's Health Minister announced that an ambitious program is being designed to help the poorest countries of the African continent. POETRY OF DULCE MARIA LOYNAZ, SUNG BY AMAURY PEREZ, PRESENTED IN PINAR DEL RIO Pinar del Rio, May 24(RHC)-- A CD with the poetry of Dulce Maria Loynaz, put to music and sung by Amaury Perez, was presented in the western province of Pinar del Rio. The poems of Dulce Maria Loynaz, winner of the 1992 Cervantes Prize, were selected from some of her books and are included on the CD entitled "Eternidad" - "Eternity" -- produced in homage to the renowned Cuban poet. CAMERAS ROLL ON NEW FILM ABOUT CUBAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE Havana, May 24(RHC)-- The cameras are rolling on a new film about last century's Cuban war of independence against Spain. The movie is being directed by Spanish filmmaker Pedro Carvajal. The renowned director will offer new, historical material on Cuba's war against Spanish colonialism. The feature-length film, which will run for about 90 minutes, will see the performance of Spanish actors Jorge Sanz, Ana Alvarez, Eloy Azorin and Cristina Collado. Cuban actors in the movie are Jose Antonio Rodriguez, Carlos Padron, Gretel Pequeno and Asenez Rodriguez.
