Segments of the "Covert Action Program Against The Castro Regime" and of "Operation Mongoose" -- both adopted in the early 1960s by the U.S. administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower -- constitute irrefutable proof of the direct participation of the U.S. government in the promotion of terrorism against Cuba. At the trial proceedings, testimony continues concerning the vicious brutality of the Escambray Mountain bandits, who were organized and financed by Washington between 1960 and 1965. So far, three days of testimony have revealed that the counterrevolutionary bandits mainly targeted civilians, with some bandit groups never even venturing to face the revolutionary militia. Maria Cristina Fuentes narrated how the terrorists savagely beat and then hung her husband on the front porch of their home in front of their six children. Eugenio Turjillo Hernandez, chief of one of the sectors of struggle against the bandits, testified concerning some 43 cases of horrendous crimes against farmers and teachers in Cuba's literacy campaign -- many of whom were tortured alive. Another militia member testified to having seen numerous air drops of arsenals and explosives for the bandits from planes that could only have come from the United States. Another case is that of Alberto Delgado Delgado, who managed to infiltrate bandit groups in the Escambray Mountains, but was brutally murdered when he was discovered. His story was transformed into the famous Cuban film "El Hombre de Maisinicu," and became further evidence of Washington's direct participation in the aggressions against Cuba. RESOLUTION ON PUERTO RICAN SELF-DETERMINATION PASSED BY UNITED NATIONS DECOLONIALIZATION COMMITTEE New York, July 7(RHC)-- The UN Decolonialization Committee approved a resolution sponsored by Cuba on Tuesday, calling on the United States to halt military exercises on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques and allow the Puerto Rican people to exercise their right to self-determination. The resolution was approved 12 votes in favor with five abstentions. According to the text of the resolution, which will be presented to the UN General Assembly for ratification, Puerto Rico is "a Latin American and Caribbean nation with its own national identity." The resolution states that the Puerto Rican people have "the inalienable right to self-determination and independence" and calls on Washington to free all Puerto Rican political prisoners being held in U.S. jails. For the first time in debates by the Decolonialization Committee on the issue of Puerto Rico, the governor of the island, Pedro Rosello, was in attendance and called on the UN committee to list Puerto Rico as a colony. Rosello, however, merely wants to force the U.S. Congress into recognizing a plebiscite in Puerto Rico in which he hopes statehood would win. CUBA'S PRODUCTIVE SECTORS HAVE GROWN THIS YEAR Havana, July 7(RHC)-- Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage stated that almost all of the island's productive sectors have grown this year, confirming the country's consistent economic recovery which began in 1995. Speaking with reporters in Havana, Vice President Lage said that given these achievements so far this year, Cuba should be able to surpass the previously predicted growth of 2.5 percent for 1999. Reiterating that during the first half of this year, the country registered a growth of 6.1 percent, the Cuban official said that this year's sugar harvest as well as income generated by tourism have decisively contributed to the increase in the figures. He pointed out that sectors like construction, agriculture, communications and trade have also contributed to the growth rate, adding that during the first six months of this year, 12,000 people have found new jobs. Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage emphasized that it is important to increase investments on the island, create conditions that will allow continued improvements in tourism and comply with financial commitments made during recent years -- priorities that will permit the country to sustain its development. Finally, Lage said that Cuban authorities are very pleased with the growth rate and economic results achieved so far this year. SECOND IBEROAMERICAN MEETING OF NATIONAL COORDINATORS GETS UNDERWAY TOMORROW IN THE CUBAN CAPITAL Havana, July 7(RHC)-- The Second Iberoamerican Meeting of National Coordinators will be held on Thursday and Friday at Havana's International Convention Center. Ivan Mora announced that representatives of all of the Iberoamerican nations will attend the meeting which gets underway tomorrow. CUBA WILL SUPPORT MEXICO AS CHAIR OF IBEROAMERICAN SECRETARIAT OF COOPERATION Havana, July 7(RHC)-- Cuba has expressed its support of Mexico to chair the Iberoamerican Secretariat of Cooperation, which will be established during the 9th Iberoamerican Summit in November. Cuba's Deputy Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation Minister Raul Taladrid believes that having Mexico as the chair will help balance the institution, whose headquarters is located in Spain. The establishment of a Secretariat of Cooperation was proposed during the 8th Iberoamerican Summit in Portugal last year. The purpose of the organization will be to follow up on each project that is carried out in the region. DIRECTOR OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC'S FOLKLORE INSTITUTE HONORED DURING CARIBBEAN FESTIVAL Santiago de Cuba, July 7(RHC)-- The Director of the Dominican Republic's Folklore Institute, Dagoberto Tejeda Ortiz, received the Casa del Caribe International Prize for his outstanding work in conserving the region's cultural patrimony. The prize, awarded during a ceremony held at the Heredia Theater in eastern Santiago de Cuba, recognized Ortiz's research of the roots of traditional popular culture for over 30 years. The Dominican intellectual expressed his appreciation and affirmed his commitment to defend the region's artistic and literary treasures. Ortiz added that he would continue to support Cuba's cultural project, which he said has contributed to Latin American and Caribbean integration.
