RHC Special - Winnipeg 99 - Cuba 7/30/99 Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit ............................................................... CUBANEWS FROM RADIO HAVANA CUBA E-mail: rhc@radiohc.org http://www.radiohc.org SPECIAL / WINNIPEG '99 / CUBA AT THE PANAMERICAN GAMES Friday, 30 July 1999 The following is a summary of Cuba's participation at the Panamerican Games in Winnipeg, Canada. -------------------------------------------------------- 27 gold, 23 silver and 19 bronze medals have been awarded to Cuba at the Panam games as of Thursday. Skeet shooter Juan Rodriguez grabs the island's only gold, setting a new Panam record. Boxing and Sotomayor's performance generate great expectation. Thursday was a relatively quiet day at the Winnipeg Games, considering that only eight sets of medals were at stake. Three were distributed in shooting and the rest in cycling, diving, equestrian and track and field. And while Canada won four golds more yesterday and it's coming closer to the island's harvest, Cuba still maintains its second place by countries with 27 gold after wrapping Thursday's competitions. The only gold medal the island grabbed yesterday came with Juan Rodriguez's sharp eye in skeet. Margarita Tarradel won bronze in women's pistol, giving the island its second and last medal on Thursday. Rodriguez not only won the gold in skeet, but also set a new Panamerican record with 147 clay targets destroyed, thus keeping for the third consecutive edition the island's supremacy in that discipline. Guillermo Torres was the Havana 91 winner; Servando Puldon ratified the title in Mar del Plata in 1995. Juan Rodriguez's performance was also valid for his classification for the Sidney 2000 Olympic Games. A little bit later came the sad note of the day, when Cuba fell for the second consecutive time in baseball. Canada, the rival and the only team undefeated so far in baseball competitions, scored eight runs to Cuba's one. Cuba has exhibited a poor performance on the field. Pitchers have been unable to control the situation, and yesterday players connected only four hits. On Saturday, Cuba plays against the Dominican Republic, which fell to Nicaragua -- 3-2. Panamaa defeated Guatemala 7-3 and will have the U.S. as its next rival. If Cuba loses, the island's team will not only be eliminated, but will also not obtain a ticket for the Olympic Games. The setbacks suffered by the Cuban baseball team have thus far been the major surprise at the tournament. These last two games have sparked a great deal of astonishment and controversy among fans on the island.
