CUBANEWS FROM RADIO HAVANA CUBA E-mail: rhc@radiohc.org http://www.radiohc.org SPECIAL / WINNIPEG '99 / CUBA AT THE PANAMERICAN GAMES Wednesday, 28 July 1999 The following is a summary of Cuba's participation at the Panamerican Games in Winnipeg, Canada. -------------------------------------------------------- Cuba won five gold, six silver and one bronze medal in gymnastics and track and field on Tuesday, the sixth day of competitions at the 13th edition of the Panamerican Games underway in Winnipeg, Canada -- maintaining its second place by nations. The big news of the day was gymnast Eric Lopez, who crowned himself in men's individuals by apparatus in pommel horse, rings and parallel bars, plus a silver medal in horizontal bar. Joining the Cuban medal harvest in men's gymnastics was Abel Drigs with gold in vault and bronze in parallel bars. Yoandris Diaz grabbed two silver medals in vault and floor exercises. But the remarkable performance of Cuban gymnasts in Winnipeg was capped by gold in women's vault obtained by Arazay Jova. The silver went to Brazilian Daiane Santos and Venezuelan Eddelin Zabaleta got bronze. In track and field, javelin throwers Emeterio Gonzalez and Luis Rigondeaux made numbers one and two in men's. Gonzalez took the top honors with 77.46 meters, but could not break the Panam record he himself set during the Mar del Plata Games four years ago. The record stands at 79.28 meters. The United States got bronze. Yumisleidis Cumba was silver in women's shot put with 18.67. In team sports, Cuba won in baseball 10-1 against Brazil. In volleyball, the men's team defeated Barbados three sets to nothing 25-22; 25-18 and 25-21 -- using bench players and in women's, Peru lost to the island 3-0. In women's water polo, the Cuban team managed to catch the last train and classified for the semi-finals after filing three defeats; they beat Puerto Rico 5-2. Another victory was in women's field hockey -- upping Mexico 3-0, and accumulates two victories and one defeat. Also during the sixth day of competitions, Mayra Gonzalez got her classification in women's single scull while the seven men that make up the free style wrestling team did the same. No smiles for the island in women's shooting and men's diving. Badminton players who came for their debut were left out of the finals along with men's roller skaters. Meanwhile, the island's men's soccer team scored in its own goal post to finally lose 2-nothing to Jamaica and now has a very slim chance to reach the finals. Cuba's medal count should increase Wednesday with finals in wrestling, diving, shooting, rowing, while fans on the island will be glued to their TV sets and radios to follow Cuba facing Brazil in women's volleyball and the U.S. in baseball. A total of 165 medals will be awarded today, compared with 111 yesterday. However, Friday will be day that will experience a pick at the games with a total of 287 medals at stake -- more than 10 percent of all the medals to be distributed during the games. The total amount is 2217 medals. [c] 1999, Radio Habana Cuba All rights reserved Articles cannot be reproduced, reprinted or published in any system without the consent of RHC.
