The encounter is aimed at analyzing the regional impact of the world economic crisis and setting up strategies to face its consequences. The event, set for September 2nd and 3rd at Havana's International Convention Center, is in preparation for the upcoming 9th Summit of Iberoamerican Heads of State and Government, scheduled for next November in the Cuban capital. Sources from the Cuban Ministry of Planning and the Economy told journalists that during next week's meeting, regional economic ministers will discuss financial policies implemented by their respective nations. Also attending the meeting will be delegates from the main international economic institutions and agencies, including the Latin American Economic Commission (CEPAL), the Latin American Economic System (SELA), the Association of Latin American Integration (ALADI) and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS). The results of the 2nd Meeting of Iberoamerican Economy Ministers will be submitted for consideration during the 9th Summit of Iberoamerican Heads of State and Government in November. CARIBBEAN SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES OPENS IN SANTIAGO Santiago de Cuba, August 25(RHC)-- The Caribbean School of Medicine will open its doors next Monday, August 30th, in eastern Santiago de Cuba province. The school will train medical students from the Caribbean -- part of Cuba's efforts to help improve the quality of life of peoples of the region. Classes will begin on September 1st for 117 Haitian students who have already taken preparatory courses, raising their educational level to pre-med standards. The Caribbean School of Medicine is affiliated with the Institute of Medical Sciences of Santiago de Cuba. The institute was founded 37 years ago, and has graduated some 18,596 health professionals, including over 600 foreign specialists. 7th INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON DENGUE CONTINUES IN HAVANA Havana, August 25(RHC)-- The 7th International Seminar on Dengue is taking place at Havana's Pedro Kuri Institute of Tropical Medicine. The training seminar is being attended by some 100 specialists and scientists from Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Brazil, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Mexico, the United States and Cuba. On Wednesday, participants had the opportunity to participate in three conferences given by professor Robert Shope from the University of Texas. His lectures dealt with the emergence of yellow fever in the Americas and dengue-like illnesses. The 7th International Seminar on Dengue runs through September 3rd. Until then, participants will be dealing with important issues such as epidemiology and a recombinant dengue vaccine. DELEGATION OF MEXICAN BUSINESS EXECUTIVES VISITS CUBA Havana, August 25(RHC)-- A delegation of business executives from the Mexican state of Yucatan arrived in Cuba Tuesday to explore trade opportunities with the largest Caribbean island. The delegation is headed by Yucatan's Development Secretary, Ricardo Dajer Nahum, and includes ten officials and executives from the Mexican Chamber of Commerce. Upon arriving in the Cuban capital, Dajer Nahum expressed his delegation's interest in expanding economic and trade relations with Cuba -- pointing to multi-destination tourism and the textile and food industries as possible areas of negotiations. The Mexican visitors will meet with high-ranking officials from the Cuban Ministries of Basic Industry, Foreign Trade, Tourism and Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation. CHILEAN LEGISLATORS MEET WITH CUBAN OFFICIALS Havana, August 25(RHC)-- A visiting delegation from the Chilean- Cuban Interparliamentary Friendship Group met Wednesday with Cuba's Minister for Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation Ibrahim Ferradaz. The delegation is headed by the group's president, Alejandro Navarro Brain. The Chilean legislators arrived in Havana on Monday at the invitation of the island's Parliament. On the third day of their visit to Cuba, the Chilean legislators toured Havana's fishing port, the colonial center of Old Havana and a children's daycare center.
