The audience present at Havana's Amadeo Roldan Theater applauded the 7th Symphony the Austrian romantic composer Gustav Mahler, calling the Italian director back to the stage several times. The 140 orchestra members were selected from among the best talents of 19 European nations. THE FINAL SESSION OF THE LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN CONTINENTAL STUDENT ORGANIZATION WINDS UP ON FRIDAY Havana, August 13 (RHC)-The final session of the Latin American and Caribbean Continental Student Organization winds up on Friday. More than 50 delegates from 17 countries participating in the event. The meetings, which took place on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the regional institution, examined preparations for the Latin American and Caribbean Student's Congress to take place in Havana in the year 2000. The delegates will also participate next week to the international youth encounter on neoliberalism and its effects on the region's youngest citizens. THE LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN VOLUNTARY WORK BRIGADE EXPRESS SUPPORT FOR CUBAN PEOPLE Havana, August 13 (RHC)-The 6th Latin American and Caribbean Voluntary Work Brigade currently visiting the island expressed their support of the Cuban people's right to sue the United States for 40 years of attacks and aggressions. The over 280 brigadistas from 11 countries as well as representatives from France, Greece and South Africa, strongly condemned Washington's almost 40 year blockade against Cuba calling it an open violation of international law and the UN Charter. The Latin American and Caribbean Voluntary Work Brigade also rejected anti- Cuba maneuvers at the recently concluded Pan American Games in Winnipeg Canada aimed at discrediting Cuban athletes. THE SECOND INTERNATIONAL ENCOUNTER OF ECONOMISTS ON GLOBALIZATION AND PROBLEMS OF DEVELOPMENT WILL BE HELD IN HAVANA Havana, August 13 (RHC)-The second International Encounter of Economists on Globalization and Problems of Development will be held in Havana January 24th through the 29th. The first encounter was held early this year with the participation of over one thousand 300 delegates from 51 countries. Next January's event will be aimed at discussing issues like the evaluation of the world economy, world financial flows, trade and economic integration as well as alternatives for national, regional and world development. The second Encounter on Globalization and Problems of Development is being sponsored by the Association of Latin American and Caribbean Economists and the Association of Cuban Economists. CUBANS HAVE CONTRIBUTED NEARLY HALF A MILLION VOLUNTARY BLOOD DONATIONS SO FAR THIS YEAER Camaguey, August 13 (RHC)-Members of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, CDR, have contributed almost half a million voluntary blood donations so far this year. A gesture that will benefit patients throughout the island. Cuba is among the few countries, that, thanks to its free health care system, is able to comply with the projects of the World Heath Organization including receiving one blood donation for every 20 inhabitants, something which has become a reality in various of the island's provinces. TWO US SENATORS TO VISIT CUBA Havana, August 13 (RHC)- US Democrat minority leader, Senator Thomas Daschle and Senator Byron Dorgan, of South Dakota and North Dakota, are to arrive in Cuba on Friday to reportedly exchange opinions with Cuban authorities. The visit comes after the President of the US Chamber of Commerce Thomas Donahue recently traveled to Cuba. The US Chamber of Commerce represents over three million US companies.
