ILLINOIS GOVERNOR PLANS TO VISIT CUBA GUATEMALAN FOREIGN MINISTER EDUARDO STEIN BARILLAS BEGINS THURSDAY OFFICIAL VISIT TO CUBA Havana, August 18 (RHC) -- Guatemalan Foreign Minister Eduardo Stein Barillas will begin Thursday an official visit to Cuba. The visit comes on the occasion of the first binational Cuba- Guatemala gathering here in Havana, slated to begin on Friday. Representatives of both governments have been holding coordinating meetings to prepare the gathering, aimed at a general evaluation of bilateral relations. Cuba and Guatemala plan to draw up a 2 year program to further strengthen and develop cooperation between the 2 countries. CUBA AND MEXICO SIGN AGREEMENT TO EXPAND BILATERAL COOPERATION Mexico City, August 18(RHC)-- Mexico and Cuba signed on Monday an agreement that allows for the expansion of bilateral cooperation in fields like science and technology, agriculture, cattle raising, fishing, energy and the environment, as well as health and social security. The agreement was in the context of the preparatory meeting of the First Cuba-Mexico Cooperation Commission for Development which wrapped up in Mexico City on Tuesday. The Cuban delegation to the two-day encounter was headed by the island's Deputy Minister for Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation Raul Taladrid. The high-ranking Cuban official pointed to the creation of seven working subcommissions as the main achievement of the meeting, since as he said, it constitutes a new and more defined working structure between both nations. The head of the Mexican delegation, the Executive Director of the Institute for International Cooperation of Mexico's Secretariat for Foreign Affairs, Jorge Alberto Lozoya, stated that the accords signed will serve to strengthen and expand already constructive bilateral cooperation. In related news, bilateral trade and migration are among the main issues to be discussed during the Third Cuba-Mexico Interparliamentary Meeting set for October 28th through the 30th in the Cuban capital. The President of the Mexican Senate Foreign Relations Commission, Fernando Solanas told the press in the Mexican capital that the encounter with Cuban legislators will equally serve to discuss other issues of common interest. YOUTH AND STUDENT SEMINAR ON NEOLIBERALISM CONTINUES IN HAVANA Havana, August 18(RHC)-- The International Youth and Student Seminar on Neoliberalism entered its third and last day of sessions Wednesday with the active participation of delegates. Havana's National theater was this time the scene for presentations on the impact of neoliberal policies on current and future generations. During the morning session, first deputy Foreign Minister Jorge Bolanos, reflected on the implications of the New World Order on the threshold of the new millennium, and pointed out that concepts such as sovereignty, none interference, and self- determination are constantly eroded by US imperialism and its Western allies. The War on Yugoslavia, he stressed, was the climax of this behavior. Meanwhile, U.S. delegation member Cecilia Brennan took part in discussions on youth marginalization in capitalist societies and said the conference has overwhelmingly met its objectives. The seminar also heard in its final day, representatives from Russia, Iraq, Argentina, Spain, Ghana, and other countries. U.S. REPATRIATES CUBAN IMMIGRANTS Havana, August 18 (RHC)-- A new group of undocumented Cuban immigrants was returned to the Caribbean island Tuesday by the U.S. authorities in the 147th such operation since the signing of migration accords between Havana and Washington in May of 1995. The group, made up of 13 men and one woman, was picked up at sea while trying to reach U.S territory. Tuesday's operation brings to 2 415 the number of undocumented immigrants returned to Cuba in compliance with the migration accords. ILLINOIS GOVERNOR PLANS TO VISIT CUBA Illinois, August 18 (RHC)-- Illinois Governor, George Ryan has said he hopes to visit Cuba this fall, according to a press dispatch released by the local newspaper The St Luis Post. According to the newspaper, the aim of the trip will be to explore possibilities of helping Illinois companies do business on the Caribbean island some day. The press release added that Governor Ryan's staff is immersed in arranging the details and getting federal permission for the trip, which could take place as soon as October.
