Delegates at the conference are discussing social, cultural and political problems in the Caribbean, the situation of workers following the abolition of slavery and the problems of women in the region among other issues. During the opening ceremony at the University of Havana's Aula Magna, the President of the Association of Caribbean Historians, Jacque Adelaide, welcomed participants to the event. Among those attending the conference are the Dean of the School of Geography at Oxford University, Colin Clark; the Deputy Dean of the University of the West Indies, based in Jamaica, Roy Augier; and Franklin Knight, President of the Latin American Studies Association. The Association of Caribbean Historians has over 400 members and is aimed at recovering the history of the region. ANOTHER CUBAN MEDICAL TEAM ARRIVES IN NICARAGUA Managua, April 13(RHC)-- A new group of 28 Cuban health specialists has arrived in Nicaragua to join 64 others that are offering their services to the victims of Hurricane Mitch. Nicaraguan Health Minister Marta McCoy stated that part of the Cuban medical personnel will be located on the country's Atlantic Coast, while the rest will provide support for the work of other Cuban medical brigades in the area of Rio Coco. McCoy praised the work of Cuban doctors and nurses in Nicaragua, pointing to the fact that the mortality rate has been dramatically reduced in the regions where they are offering their services. PANAMA'S INDUSTRY AND TRADE MINISTER SAYS RELATIONS WITH CUBA ARE EXCELLENT Havana, April 13(RHC)-- Panama's Industry and Trade Minister, Raul Hernandez, told reporters in Havana that Cuban-Panamanian relations are excellent. Hernandez, who is heading a delegation from that Central American country, arrived in Havana on Monday for a working visit. The Panamanian official said that his country is interested in contributing more to the Cuban market and facilitating trade opportunities for the island's business executives. Cuban Foreign Trade Minister Ricardo Cabrisas welcomed the Panamanian delegation, noting that their visit comes at an important time for bilateral relations. During his stay on the island, Panama's industry and trade minister will sign two bilateral agreements related to industrial protection and the promotion of exports. FOREST FIRE CONTINUES IN WESTERN PINAR DEL RIO Pinar del Rio, April 13(RHC)-- Authorities in Pinar del Rio province are still battling a forest fire, attempting to prevent it from spreading to other areas. The head of the National Forest Rangers, Manuel Lama, told local reporters that April is one of the worst months of the year for forest fires, adding that approximately 85 percent of all forest fires are caused by humans. The large fire has now been brought under control, thanks to the efforts of more than 2000 volunteers. Dozens of planes have been dumping water on the forest fire, helping to prevent further losses.
