Today's stories: 1.- SECOND WORLD ENCOUNTER IN SOLIDARITY WITH CUBA SLATED FOR NOVEMBER 2000 2.- WARNING ISSUED DUE TO SEVERE DROUGHT IN CAMAGUEY PROVINCE 3.- FOREST FIRE IN WESTERN PINAR DEL RIO UNDER CONTROL 4.- CUBA AND FAO WILL LAUNCH PROGRAM OF TECHNICAL COOPERATION SECOND WORLD ENCOUNTER IN SOLIDARITY WITH CUBA SLATED FOR NOVEMBER 2000 Havana, April 15(RHC)-- The Second World Encounter in Solidarity with Cuba will be held next year from November 10th through the 14th in the Cuban capital. According to the President of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), Sergio Corrieri, a call has been issued by 45 political, social and grassroots organizations to take part in the international event. Hundreds of solidarity activists are expected to attend the conference. The call urges the world to condemn Washington's economic blockade against Cuba, calling on people of all ideological or religious beliefs to reject the policy that attempts to crush the Cuban people's independence and sovereignty. ICAP's president noted that the First World Encounter in Solidarity with Cuba was held in November 1994 -- when the enemies of the Cuban Revolution were betting on its collapse. But, in these four years since the first solidarity conference, Cuba has not only resisted but has maintained its social achievements despite the economic crisis. Corrieri also pointed out that despite Washington's hostile attitude toward Cuba, the Revolution has not stopped its expression of solidarity towards the Third World. The president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples stated that Washington continues its aggressive policy against the island, despite the UN General Assembly's annual vote condemning the U.S. blockade of Cuba. WARNING ISSUED DUE TO SEVERE DROUGHT IN CAMAGUEY PROVINCE Camaguey, April 15(RHC)--The central Cuban province of Camaguey has issued the first phase of an emergency warning due to a severe drought affecting the region. The president of the provincial government and head of Camaguey's Civil Defense, Mercedes Escuredo Olazabal, said that while visiting some of the province's municipalities, local authorities saw the damage caused by the drought. One of the areas most affected has been cattle raising, which depends on water and green pastures. The dry spell has drastically reduced milk production, which is now two million liters below last year's level. Agricultural production has also been seriously affected. The Cuban government is doing all it can to resolve the situation and is providing people in the area with clean drinking water. FOREST FIRE IN WESTERN PINAR DEL RIO UNDER CONTROL Pinar del Rio, April 15(RHC)-- One of the largest forest fires since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in western Pinar del Rio is now under control. The First Secretary of the Communist Party in the municipality of Guane, Alba Rosa Hernandez, told reporters that most of the volunteer fire fighters have left the area, but 200 continue to keep an eye on the situation. She added that others are preparing to plant trees, replacing those destroyed by the devastating fire. There have been no reported victims of the forest fire, which affected some 600 hectares of pine and eucalyptus trees. CUBA AND FAO WILL LAUNCH PROGRAM OF TECHNICAL COOPERATION Havana, April 15 (RHC)-- Cuba and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will begin a program of technical cooperation in the area of forestry. The program is designed to rationally and efficiently use the resources of bio-energy. The 240,000 dollar project, approved by the FAO, will continue through the year 2001 under the direction of the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture.
