The amount is 400,000 tons more than last year's mark. During an official activity over the weekend, Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage emphasized that more than an economic achievement, this year's sugar harvest "is a message of revolutionary optimism for the Cuban people," adding that more than 70 sugar mills continue producing across the island. Cuba's Sugar Minister Ulises Rosales del Toro commented that this year's improved harvest demonstrates the beginning of a recovery in the sugar sector. PAN AMERICAN HEALTH ORGANIZATION REPRESENTATIVE IN CUBA Havana, April 26(RHC)-- The Deputy Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Mirta Roses Periago, arrived in Havana on Sunday to participate in a meeting of PAHO regional directors, scheduled to run through Wednesday. The PAHO official noted that meetings are held three times a year with the representatives of each country in the region. Mirta Roses said that the purpose of the meetings is to review the technical situation in the health sector. Pointing out that Cuba is of special importance because the island is "the pioneer of aid to other nations," the regional health official also referred to the island's medical assistance to nations in Central America -- characterizing it as "a very generous gift from the Cuban government and its people." The deputy director of the Pan American Health Organization stressed that the Cuban experience in primary attention has been an example for many countries. HIGH-RANKING CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY OFFICIALS VISIT CUBA Havana, April 26(RHC)-- A high-ranking delegation of the Chinese Communist Party is currently visiting Havana. Heading the delegation is Wei Jianxing, a member of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee. During their visit to the island, the delegation will meet with Cuban Communist Party officials as well as members of the Confederation of Cuban Workers and will also tour places of social interest related to the development of health and education. PRESIDENT OF CUBA'S NATIONAL ASSEMBLY HEADS PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION TO BRITAIN London, April 26(RHC)-- The President of the Cuban National Assembly, Ricardo Alarcon, is heading a parliamentary delegation to Britain. The delegation arrived in London on Sunday. During their visit, they will exchange views on democratic systems and their relation to society. Before leaving Havana's Jose Marti International Airport, the Cuban official met with the head of the Latin American and Caribbean Department of Britain's Foreign Ministry and Commonwealth, who had just arrived in Havana for an official visit. Both officials said that their respective countries have important bilateral relations. REGIONAL RESEARCHERS PARTICIPATE IN WORKSHOP ON THE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF AIDS Havana, April 26(RHC)-- Researchers from Latin America and the Caribbean are participating in a regional workshop on the prevention and treatment of AIDS as part of a UNESCO project. The workshop got underway Monday in the Cuban capital. The event is aimed at promoting cooperation in the development of interactive systems among international institutions, national authorities and society in general. AIDS has affected the lives of millions of people in the world, which is why an urgent action plan is needed to get the community involved in the fight against the deadly virus. RENOWNED LATIN AMERICAN WRITERS CONGRATULATE CASA DE LAS AMERICAS ON 40th ANNIVERSARY Havana, April 26(RHC)-- Renowned writers Mario Benedetti and Eduardo Galeano from Uruguay have send a message of congratulations to the Havana-based cultural institution Casa de las Americas on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. In a letter, Mario Benedetti says that Casa de las Americas has been a fundamental factor in the dissemination of knowledge of the cultural realities of Latin America as well as a source of regional solidarity. As part of the festivities, Casa de las Americas held a giant outdoor concert Saturday night with the participation of Chilean, Argentinean and Spanish artists together with Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez, Santiago Feliu, Carlos Varela, Sara Gonzalez and many others. CUBAN UNION OF ARTISTS AND WRITERS DELEGATION VISITS CHINA Beijing, April 26(RHC)-- The President of Cuba's Union of Writers and Artists (UNEAC), Carlos Marti, is heading a delegation to China on a four-day official visit. The Cuban delegation is scheduled to visit places of cultural interest in Beijing and Shanghai. According to the program, the UNEAC officials will meet with Chinese authorities and parliamentarians and visit the Great Wall of China, Imperial Palace and the Shanghai Television Tower. The Cuban delegation will review an agreement between UNEAC and China's Artistic and Literary Federation which promotes exchange and bilateral cooperation.
