The president of Cuba_s Parliament, Ricardo Alarcon and Foreign Minister Roberto Robaina, also paid their respects to the late Uruguayan leader. Uruguayan vice president Hugo Batalla was buried with honors in Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital. Batalla, who was 72, died of cancer on Saturday. Cuban President Fidel Castro and other government officials sent a floral wreath in name of the Cuban people. SPANISH REGION OF NAVARRA DONATES EQUIPMENT FOR MATERNITY HOSPITAL IN EASTERN CITY OF BAYAMO Havana, October 5 (RHC)-- The government and the Red Cross of the Spanish region of Navarra have donated 400 thousand dollars for a maternity hospital under construction in the eastern city of Bayamo. In addition, a delegation from Navarra donated emergency equipment for the maternity -infant health center which will have more than 600 beds. The leader of Navarra_s Red Cross, Jose Luis Alli, and the head of the region_s Social Welfare Office, Jesus Ayala, stressed that solidarity with Cuba from the Spanish region is growing by the day. ANTI WAR GROUP _PUGWASH_ TO MEET THIS WEEK IN HAVANA Havana,October 5 (RHC)-- The president of Cuba_s Peace Movement, Orlando Fundora, has announced that October 6th to the 8th the anti war group Pugwash will meet in Havana to examine current dangers to humanity. Fundora told the press in Havana that the meeting_s principal focus will be health care in developing nations. According to the Cuban peace activist, the island use the opportunity to demonstrate its advances in the field as well as its medical assistence to other countries. The President of the Cuban non- governmental organization, announced that some 20 representatives from the five continents have confirmed participation in the meeting including delegations from Croatia, El Salvador, and Argentina. PORTUGUESE COLLECT MONEY TO PURCHASE MEDICINES FOR CUBA Havana, October 5 (RHC)-- A musical maraton was held in the Portuguese city of Coimbra to raise money to buy medicines for Cuba.. Cuba_s ambassador to Portugal, Mercedes Aguiar, thanked the Portuguese people in the name of the Cuban people for what she called, their permanent gesture of solidarity as the island continues confronting Washington_s economic agressions against it. . YOUNG COMMUNIST LEAGUE PROVINCIAL ASSEMBLY WINDS UP IN HAVANA Havana, October 5 (RHC)-- The provincial assembly of the Young Communist League, UJC, wound up on Sunday with the words of the first secretary of the Communist Party of the city of Havana, Esteban Lazo. The Communist party leader urged Cuban youths to continue fighting to overcome inefficiency, and everything that attempts to harm the Revolution. Lazo said that in order for the Cuban Revolution to remain indestructable Cuban young people must must be loyal , combatitive , enthusiastic happy and mature. The Communist Party official stressed that he believes that the island_s youth are fully conscience of the many challenges facing today_s Cuba. . During the UJC provincial assembly, the delegation that will represent the City of Havana at the upcoming 7th Congress of the youth organization was elected and Enrique Gomez was ratifed as the UJC_s first secretary in Havana . . CUBAN AND SPANISH MASS MEDIA CONGRESS TO OPEN THIS WEEK IN HAVANA Havana, October 5 (RHC)-- Over 70 Spanish media professionals are in Havana to participate in the 15th Congress of the Spanish Media Association and to get a first hand look at the the island. It is the first time the Spanish Media Association will hold its annual congress outside of Spain. . The meeting is scheduled to begin on Thursday and will include a tour of three Cuban provinces. During the event six papers on journalism in Cuba and Spain will be analyzed as well as a study dealing with the influence of Cuba and its culture on the Spanish. GERMAN BUSINESS REPRESENTIVES VISITING THE ISLAND Havana, October 5 (RHC)-- Representatives of 20 German firms say they are ready to increase commercial and economic ties with Cuba. A delegation of business executives, sponsored by Germany_s Economy Ministry, held meetings with Cuban government representives during which they discussed Germany_s economic presence on the island.
