The 13th Session of the International Sugar Organization kicked-off today with the participation of more than 100 Cuban and foreign delegates. The event was presided over by Cuba's Vice President Carlos Lage, Sugar Minister Ulises Rosales del Toro and the President of the International Sugar Organization Peter Baron. The gathering of representatives from sugar producing countries from around the world is aimed at exchanging views on the current development of the sector in their countries, discussing the latest advancements in cultivating sugar cane and multi-lateral cooperation towards improving the sector's role in the coming century. The President of the International Sugar Organization, Peter Baron, told Radio Havana Cuba that the island's sugar industry will be a key topic on the meeting's agenda. In his speech to the meeting, Cuban Finance Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez announced that the island's sugar production will reach less than four million tons this year. However, Rodriguez said that Cuba has great potential for recovery. Parallel to the 13th Session of the International Sugar Organization, Cuban and foreign sugar experts inaugurated the 5th International Congress on Sugar Derivatives -- Diversification '98. INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION UNIVERSITY '98 OPENS IN HAVANA Havana, May 26(RHC)-- Nearly 200 delegates from some 20 nations are taking part in Havana's International Convention, University '98. Academics from around the world will exchange views on education and analyze the challenges for the next century. Inaugurating the event, the Dean of the University of Havana, Juan Vela, said that the convention is a follow-up to the Regional Conference on Politics and Strategies for the Transformation of Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean, which took place in the Cuban capital in 1996. On Tuesday, three round tables were held with discussions on the formation of new professionals, the participation of scientific research professors as well as post graduate courses in Cuba. University '98 was organized by UNESCO -- the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization -- and will run through Saturday. DELEGATION OF PARLIAMENTARIANS FROM BARBADOS VISITS CUBA Havana, May 26(RHC)-- The President of the Barbados Senate and member of the Labor Party, Fred Gollod, is in Havana heading a delegation of parliamentarians. The delegation from Barbados is visiting Cuba with the objective of strengthening bilateral relations. The legislators will meet with the President of Cuba's Parliament, Ricardo Alarcon, as well as other government officials. They will also visit places of scientific, cultural and historical interest. CUBAN SINGER-SONGWRITER PABLO MILANES TO PERFORM IN PANAMA Havana, May 26(RHC)-- Cuban singer-songwriter, Pablo Milanes is scheduled to perform a series of concerts in Panama beginning June 2nd. This is Pablo's second visit in less than ten months to this Central American nation. Organizers of the concert tour say Pablo Milanes will perform songs from his latest recording entitled "Despertar."
