The newly-elected head of CARICOM and President of St. Lucia stated that the countries of the Caribbean are growing closer to Cuba with constant visits by high-ranking authorities and the signing of new accords. Following the recent summit of CARICOM member nations, held in the capital of St. Lucia, President Kenny Anthony condemned U.S. policies toward Cuba, calling for an end to Washington's blockade of the island. CUBAN PARLIAMENT READY TO BEGIN ITS FIRST SESSION Havana, July 6(RHC)-- The first session of Cuba's National Assembly of People's Power will begin on July 21st. The 601 deputies that make up the Cuban parliament will discuss the country's economic situation, the energy crisis and its future prospects and the main activities of the Ministry of Education for the upcoming 1998-99 school year. The work of the permanent parliamentary commissions will also be discussed as well as the activities carried out by the friendship parliamentary groups. Vice President of the Cuban Parliament, Jaime Crombet, said that a draft bill on forests will also top the session's agenda. On the 18th and 19th, the permanent commissions will meet and on the 20th, the Cuban parliamentarians will discuss the reports submitted to the Assembly by the Higher Education, Health, Agriculture and Sugar Ministries. POLISH PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION VISITS CUBA Havana, July 6(RHC)-- A Polish parliamentary delegation visiting the island has met with Cuba's Foreign Investment and Economic Cooperation Minister, Ibrahim Ferradaz, and Deputy Foreign Minister Isabel Allende. The Polish delegation is headed by Vitold Firak, President of the Polish-Cuban Friendship Parliamentary Group and the President of the Polish-Cuban Chamber of Commerce. The parliamentary group from Poland will also meet with Cuban Communist Party and government officials and will visit sites of economic, historic and cultural interest in Havana and central Sancti Spiritus province. FIRST PUERTO RICAN-CUBAN FRIENDSHIP ENCOUNTER UNDERWAY Havana, July 6(RHC)-- The President of the National Assembly's Economic Affairs Commission, Osvaldo Martinez, spoke about the island's economic recovery during a meeting at the First Puerto Rico-Cuba Friendship Solidarity Encounter. After explaining the economic measures that had to be taken on the island in order to preserve Cuba's social achievements, Osvaldo Martinez pointed out that the majority of the Cuban people support such measures. One of the issues that was discussed among 100 Puerto Rican and Cuban delegates was the impact of U.S. military intervention in Cuba and Puerto Rico during the Spanish-Cuban-American War, which took place 100 years ago.
