The Chinese official spoke with journalists following a visit to health facilities in Matanzas province. Cuban Health Minister Carlos Dotres, who accompanied the Chinese visitor during his tour of area clinics, pointed out that the island is willing to cooperate with China in the health field. Ron Yi Cao heads a Chinese delegation that arrived in Cuba over the weekend and is scheduled to sign a cooperation accord with his Cuban counterpart on Saturday. DROUGHT CONTINUES IN CUBA'S EASTERN PROVINCES Havana, August 5(RHC)-- The drought that has been affecting Cuba's eastern region continues, especially in Guantanamo, Holguin and Las Tunas provinces. Guillermo Rodriguez, an official from the Ministry of the Armed Forces, told journalists that everything is being done in an attempt to protect the area's population, agriculture and cattle. The Cuban army official pointed out that despite severe damage to the agricultural sector, the population is working together with local and national authorities to solve the crisis -- which has been described as the worst drought in the island's history. Trucks are transporting water to populated areas in an attempt to alleviate the drought situation in the region. CUBA'S NATIONAL BALLET COMPANY SUCCESSFULLY TOURS EUROPE Madrid, August 5(RHC)-- Spanish media are praising the performance of Cuba's National Ballet Company, which is touring that European nation on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. Publications like La Vanguardia, El Periodico and ABC have praised the presentation of Swan Lake, with the choreography of Cuba's Primerisima ballerina Alicia Alonso, founder of the National Ballet troupe. Following performances in Spain, Cuba's National Ballet Company will continue on to France and Switzerland. CUBA ELECTED VICE PRESIDENT OF THE PAN AMERICAN TECHNICAL STANDARDS COMMISSION Havana, August 5(RHC)-- Cuba has been elected vice president of the Pan-American Technical Standards Commission for the period 1999-2001. The honor was given to Cuba during that regional organization's recent council and 25th General Assembly held in Acapulco, Mexico. The commission is made up of 25 countries in the region. The Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese standards institutions have associate membership. The Pan-American Commission's principal activities include promoting the development of technical standards and certification, with the aim of stimulating industrial, scientific and technological advances to benefit economic and trade integration. JAMAICAN HOTEL WORKERS CONCLUDE TRAINING COURSE IN CUBA Havana, August 5(RHC)-- A group of Jamaican workers has successfully completed a training course at Cuba's FORMATUR tourism school. The workers will be employed at a new hotel in Varadero, managed by the Jamaican-owned Sandals Hotels. The Jamaican Sandals hotel chain began working with Cuba's Tourism Ministry several years ago. A new, 400-room hotel will be operating by November at the Varadero Beach Resort.
