During his stay in Madrid, the top Cuban diplomat met with Spanish President Jose Maria Aznar, Foreign Minister Abel Matutes and other high-ranking government officials. Roberto Robaina stated that Cuba's relations with Spain have now been normalized with the naming of Madrid's new ambassador to the island, Eduardo Junco, who will arrive in Havana in the coming weeks. CUBA'S EXAMPLE ALLOWS OTHERS TO SEE THAT SOCIAL JUSTICE AND SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CAN BE ACHIEVED Sancti Spiritus, April 8(RHC)-- According to a representative of the Pan American Health Organization -- PAHO, Cuba makes it possible for other nations to see that there are alternatives in achieving social justice and sustainable economic development. The PAHO representative in Cuba, Patricio Yepez, praised the country's health care system during an activity in central Sancti Spiritus province commemorating World Health Day. Patricio Yepez pointed to the importance of community participation in mobilizing different areas of the island's health care. Dedicating World Health Day to maternal care, Yepez noted the difference between Cuba and the rest of the world, especially underdeveloped countries. He stressed that in many countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America -- with the exception of Cuba -- one woman dies every minute due to maternal health problems. Dr. Miriam Alino, Director of the National Program of Maternal Health and recently selected among outstanding workers in the country, pointed out that the Cuban health care system offers the possibility of planning ahead during a woman's pregnancy and provides adequate medical attention during and after the pregnancy. DELEGATION FROM BELIZE CURRENTLY VISITS THE ISLAND Havana, April 8(RHC)-- Belize's Education and Public Services Minister, Eladio Aragon, said that his government supports Cuba's efforts to develop its cooperation ties with the Caribbean region. Currently on a visit to Cuba, Aragon met with Foreign Trade Minister Ricardo Cabrisas and exchanged views on important bilateral issues. During their talks, Aragon and Cabrisas also discussed ways to strengthen ties between Belize and Cuba, especially improving sea and air transportation in the Caribbean region. The Belician Education and Public Services Minister is heading the delegation that is participating in the Joint Technical and Economic Cooperation Commission. The meeting will conclude Thursday in the Cuban capital with the signing of bilateral agreements. U.S. SOLIDARITY ORGANIZATIONS PLAN TO MEET IN JULY Havana, April 8(RHC)-- "Constructing a New Future" is the name of a U.S.-Cuba solidarity event that will take place next July in Havana. The event will be centered around the 100th anniversary of U.S. intervention in Cuba's war of independence against Spain. Renowned political and religious personalities as well as intellectuals from both countries will sponsor the activities that will also bring together a number of Cuban-American organizations based in the United States. The National Network on Cuba as well as the U.S. solidarity-religious organization Pastors for Peace have confirmed their participation in an open challenge to Washington's travel restrictions and anti-Cuba policy. AUSTRIAN PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION CONDEMNS U.S. BLOCKADE AGAINST CUBA Havana, April 8(RHC)-- The leader of an Austrian parliamentary delegation currently visiting Cuba, Peter Kostelka, has condemned Washington's almost 40 year old blockade against Cuba and called it a violation of international law. In statements to the press in Havana, the head of the Austrian delegation said he is convinced that the island will be an attractive market for Austrian businessmen. Peter Kostelka said that his meetings with Cuban government officials have been very positive. ARGENTINEAN AGRICULTURE, FISHING AND CATTLE MINISTER VISITS CUBA Havana, April 8(RHC)-- Argentina's Agriculture, Fishing and Cattle Raising Minister Felipe Sola is on a two-day official visit to Cuba. The Argentinean official will discuss the possibilities of cooperation in the areas of scientific-technical, commercial and an exchange of technology. During his stay on the island, the Argentinean official will also meet with his Cuban counterpart, Agriculture Minister Alfredo Jordan, as well as Foreign Investment and Economic Collaboration Minister Ibrahim Ferradaz and the Cuban Minister of Fishing Orlando Rodriguez. ANTHROPOLOGY WORKSHOP UNDERWAY IN CUBAN CAPITAL Havana, April 8(RHC)-- Experts from eight countries have inaugurated an International Anthropology Workshop taking place in Cuba's Science, Technology and Environment Ministry. The Director of Cuba's Center of Anthropology, Lourdes Serrano, said that the work of the anthropologists is to recover the most authentic values that treasure the identities of each nation's people. During the conference, which concludes on Friday in Havana, participants will discuss ethnology, archeology as well as issues on racial relations and the pre-Colombian era in Cuba.
