The chinese official is on a two day visit to the island and already met with Cuban vice President Carlos Lage and Foreign Trade minister, Ricardo Cabrisas. The Chinese official arrived in Havana last Sunday from Brazil. On Tuesday, Li Lanqing will travel to Colombia and from there to Chile and Argentina. China's trade with these five Latin American nations reached close to 5 billion dollars in 1996. PRESERVATION OPERATIONS CONTINUE AT THE JURAGUA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT Havana, May 12(RHC)-- Operations to conserve resources at the Juragua nuclear power plant in central Cuba are currently underway. Experts are assembling 5 hundred tons of technical equipment and tubes as well as casting 5 hundred cubic meters of concrete. In addition, six steam generators and 6 circulation pumps will be installed, which will save some five megawatts of electricity a day benefitting thousands of consumers. In all, the 1997 maintenance project will save the island over seven hundred thousand dollars and will speed up construction when work on the nuclear power plant is resumed. BRAZILIAN AND ARGENTINEAN LAW MAKERS BEGIN OFFICIAL TOUR OF THE ISLAND Havana, May 12(RHC)-- Legislators from the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro arrive Monday in Havana. Heading the delegation is Rio legislative assembly deputy minister, Tania Jardin. Expected to be high on the work agenda are links between the Cuban and Brazilian parliaments. Meanwhile, the president of Argentina's parliament, Eduardo Menem, will arrive Tuesday in Havana for a five-day visit. Talks with the President of the Cuban National Assembly, Ricardo Alarcon and Foreign Minister, Roberto Robaina, are scheduled for Wednesday. The Argentinean lawmaker will also visit scientific and tourism facilities. SPANISH TELEVISION FILMS A DOCUMENTARY ON THE CENTENNIAL OF CUBA'S 1898 INDEPENDENCE WAR Havana, May 12(RHC)-- Spanish television and Cuba's Film Industry are co-producing a documentary T.V series on the centennial of the Cuban-Spanish-American war of 1898. The T.V series will premier on May 1st, 1998 coinciding with the centennial of the battle of Cavite in the Philipines when the Unites States intervened in the war waged by Philippine rebels against the Spanish crown. Series director, Angel Pelaez, explained that the film makers attempted to present an objective view of the independence wars of the former Spanish colonies of Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Philippines all of which ended in US intervention. The one-hour, six-chapter film includes testimonies, archival material, pictures of the era and interviews with historians. KOREAN AUTHORITIES PRESENT CUBAN DELEGATION WITH FRIENDSHIP DISTINCTION Pyong Yang, May 12(RHC)-- Members of Cuba's Armed Forces members have been honored in Pyong Yang with friendship orders. The head of the Cuban delegation and Chief of the Political Division of the Cuban Army, General Nestor Lopez Cuba, was presented with the 1st Class Friendship Distinction IN a ceremony attended by Korean Vice President, Ri Jong Ok. Also present attendance were Cuba's ambassador in North Korea, Jose Ramon Rodriguez and military attache, Colonel Arnaldo Fernandez. CUBA'S DELEGATION TO THE 14TH WORLD FESTIVAL OF YOUTH AND STUDENTS WILL BE PRESENTED ON SATURDAY Havana, May 12(RHC)-- The one thousand young people making up Cuba's delegation to the 14th World Festival of Youth and Students will be presented on Saturday. The ceremony will take place simultaneously in all the island's 14 provinces in a massive mobilization to the sugarcane fields called by the Young Communist League. The process of selecting the youth delegation began a year ago. Young workers, farmers, professionals, students, artists, athletes and members of the Armed Forces and Interior Ministry engaged in friendly competitions. The young delegates were chosen by their fellow workers and students to represent the country in the World Festival of Youth and Students which will be held in Cuba this summer. [c] 1997.
