40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ATTACK ON PRESIDENTIAL PALACE MARKED
IN HAVANA

Havana, march 14 (RHC).- Before thousands of Cubans at
Havana's Revolution Square, President Fidel Castro termed as
courageous and audacious the 1957 student assault against
dictator Fulgencio Batista's presidential palace.

The Cuban leader was the keynote speaker Wednesday, March
13th, on the 40th anniversary of the failed attack organized
by the Student Directorate, led by Jose Antonio Echeverria.
Dictator Batista was forced to flee to the roof of the
presidential palace, while the student revolutionaries reached
the third floor of the building, fighting every step of the
way. Echeverria and 24 other revolutionaries were killed in
the action.

After placing a floral reef at the placard dedicated to
Echeverria, thousands marched to Revolution Square, led by
Cuba's Federation of University Students.

Cuban President Fidel Castro said that since Batista's
military coup on March 10, 1952, the University of Havana
became a solid bastion of revolutionary struggle. He said the
attack on the presidential palace demonstrated that the Cuban
people did not fear Batista's repressive army, despite all the
sophisticated weapons and equipment provided by the United
States.

On the occasion of this solemn anniversary, President Castro
reiterated Cuba's rejection of Washington's so-called
democratic transition program for the island, calling it
perverse, cynical and immoral.

He said that Cubans already know what such a transition would
mean, because Cuba has not only lived the savage capitalism
predicated by Washington, but also because the modern
transitions that have occurred in the world have proven to be
transitions towards hell -in an implicit reference to the
chaos and poverty reigning in many countries of the former
Soviet Union. In reference to Helms-Burton, Cuban President
Fidel Castro said that a year has passed, and we're still
here.

CUBAN LEADER MEETS VISITING TURKISH HEALTH MINISTER
Havana, march 14 (RHC).- Cuban President Fidel Castro received
