Havana, July 21(RHC)-- With only seven days to go before the inauguration of the 14th World Festival of Youth and Students, hundreds of delegates are already in Cuba. Some 140 young U.S. citizens, making up the 28th Contingent of the Venceremos Brigade, arrived on the island this morning. The brigadistas will take part in a community project and then will join the more than 600 U.S. delegates attending the Festival. Meanwhile, more than 120 Uruguayan youths left Montevideo this afternoon bound for Havana. Delegates from around the island are also arriving in Havana. The Solidarity Train brought more than half of the Cuban delegation to the capital over the weekend. In other news, Cubans have contributed a total of 26 million pesos and 300,000 dollars to the Festival. On Saturday, the National Coordinating Committee officially declared the island "Ready for the Festival." Some 12,000 homes across the island, four main Discussion Centers in Havana and seven continental and regional Club Houses are ready to open their doors on July 28th -- to give youth from around the world the most memorable days of their lives. CUBA FIRMLY OPPOSES NEOLIBERAL ECONOMIC MODELS Havana, July 21(RHC)-- Five years after undertaking economic reforms, Cuba shows important levels of development -- despite Washington's hostile policy against the island. An editorial published in today's edition of "Trabajadores" points to the improvement of living standards as the result of the adoption of non-neoliberal models. The editorial in the weekly newspaper emphasizes that life on the island differs from that of other Latin American countries, where neoliberal projects have brought about weak and irregular growth in the Gross National Products of those countries. Figures show that there are some 200 million impoverished people in Latin America, while 97 million people are barely able to survive. SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM WILL SOON HAVE HEMINGWAY PROFESSORSHIP Havana, July 21(RHC)-- Havana's Jose Marti School of Journalism will soon have an Ernest Hemingway Professorship. Over the weekend, journalists and Hemingway experts and enthusiasts gathered at the School of Journalism for the official announcement of the new position. The institute's director noted that other institutions will provide information and support. They include the U.S. author's former home -- "La Vigia" -- now a museum, and the newly restored Ambos Mundos Hotel, where Hemingway stayed when he first came to Cuba. An International Hemingway Encounter: "Tough Guys Journalism," was held here last year. Work has now begun on a conference to be held in 1998, marking the 70th anniversary of Hemingway's arrival in Havana. The Ernest Hemingway Professorship will also be involved in organizing the International Hemingway Encounter that will take place in the Cuban capital from September 21st through the 24th entitled: "Hemingway Discovers Havana." The gathering will examine Hemingway's journalism and writing style and the influence of Cuba on his work. CONFERENCE OF CARIBBEAN CHURCHES MEETS IN HAVANA Havana, July 21(RHC)-- Havana's Episcopal Cathedral is the site of the 6th Assembly of the Conference of Caribbean Churches. The religious assembly gathers together all religious denominations of the region. Religious leaders and representatives from 21 regional nations are in attendance. High on the conference's agenda is an analysis of the strategy of the organizing committee for the next few years. The conference takes place every six years. Trinidad and Tobago hosted the 5th Assembly of the Conference of Caribbean Churches in 1991. DELEGATION FROM CUBAN FINANCE MINISTRY ENDS TOUR OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Havana, July 21(RHC)-- Cuban financial experts have expressed satisfaction with a recent visit to the Dominican Republic. Upon their return to the island, Cuban Deputy Finance Minister Carlos Pimentel said that while in Santo Domingo, the Cuban delegation met with experts from the Dominican finance ministry. According to Pimentel, national heritage and the operation of Free Zones were the main subjects discussed during the bilateral encounter. CUBADEPORTES PROVIDES SERVICES TO THE WORLD Havana, July 21(RHC)-- A total of 4000 Cuban sports trainers and specialists have rendered their services in more than 50 countries since 1992. That was the year when the company Cubadeportes was set up to promote Cuban sports products and allow the hiring of Cuban personnel by foreign teams. Cubadeportes General Manager Antonio Vega told journalists that 672 Cuban technicians were hired during the first half of this year and are currently working in 32 countries around the world. Vega pointed out that the largest number of Cuban specialists are in Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela and Italy. He added that the disciplines in which other countries are most interested are baseball, boxing, volleyball, track and field and swimming. The head of Cubadeportes also said that the Cuban sports industry is in charge of manufacturing sports equipment primarily for baseball and boxing and also electronic scoreboards. Some of these will be marketed to Peru and Honduras, two countries that will organize two important regional sports events later this year. Cubadeportes contributes greatly to the island's self-financing policy. Its income is not only allocated directly into sports, but also other social spheres such as the public health sector. Another of the enterprise's specialties is the holding of sports seminars and training courses on the island, the promotion of sports tourism, along with the courses offered by the Higher Sports Institute. More than 500 students from Mexico, Colombia and other nations have come to Cuba for such studies during the first six months of 1997. [c] 1997.
