LAOTIAN PRIME MINISTER KHAMTAY SIPHANDONE ENDS VISIT TO CUBA

Havana, April 28 (RHC)-- Laotian Prime Minister Khamtay
Siphandone ended his three-day visit to Cuba on Monday. The
Southeast Asian leader signed important agreements with Cuban
authorities in the areas of health, education and agriculture.
Over the weekend, Cuban President Fidel Castro awarded the
Jose Marti Order to the Laotian leader -- the highest
distinction granted by Cuba's Council of State.

Earlier Monday, before leaving the Cuban capital, Prime
Minister Siphandone toured the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital in
Old Havana and met with Cuba's Minister of Health Doctor
Carlos Dotres. The Laotian head of state also visited the
Biotechnological and Genetic Engineering Center. Speaking to
journalists in Havana, the Laotian prime minister thanked the
Cuban people for their warm hospitality during his visit and
expressed his admiration for their ability to preserve
socialism's achievements.

RENOWNED CUBAN POET DULCE MARIA LOYNAZ DIES IN HAVANA

Havana, April 28 (RHC)-- Noted Cuban poet, Dulce Maria Loynaz,
died in Havana at the age of 94. Loynaz, one of the most
important voices of lyric poetry in the Spanish-speaking
world, was awarded the Miguel de Cervantes Prize in 1992 and
the Cross Alphonse The Wise, both from Spain.

Cuban writer and poet, Miguel Barnet, said that "we have lost
the most precious voice of lyric poetry in Cuba."

HEALTH FOR ALL MEDICAL FAIR PRODUCED OVER 90 CONTRACTS BETWEEN
CUBA AND OTHER NATIONS

Havana, April 28 (RHC)-- The 8th Health For All International
Fair has closed its doors, but not without first securing 90
contracts for Cuban medical companies. Medicuba -- the
island's medical sales company -- signed contracts with firms
from Italy, Germany, Spain and China. Most foreign companies
donated several of the items on display to Cuban medical
centers.

The Health For All Fair brought together more than 300 firms
from 29 nations. Cuba and Germany received the largest number
of awards. Thirty-one gold medals were awarded for the
quality of the products displayed. Among the island's
quality winners were: the ACITAN dietary supplement, audio-
computerized equipment and a massage stimulating cream.
Twenty-five other gold medals were awarded to foreign
exhibitors, including Germany, South Korea and Denmark.

BILATERAL TRADE BETWEEN CUBA AND JAMAICA INCREASES

Havana, April 28 (RHC)-- Jamaican Foreign Minister Benjamin
Claire arrived in the Cuban capital over the weekend, where he
will meet with Cuban authorities on issues of bilateral trade.
The Jamaican foreign minister will lead his country's
delegation at the Mixed Commission for Development
Cooperation, which is being held today and tomorrow here in
Havana.

The Cuba-Jamaica mixed commission will explore areas of
bilateral economic cooperation between the two countries as
well as within the context of the Association of Caribbean
States.

CUBA'S COMMUNIST PARTY CONTINUES GROWING

Havana, April 28 (RHC)-- The ranks of Cuba's Communist Party
has risen by more than 232 thousand members over the past five
years. Communist party leader Jose Ramon Machado Ventura said
the growth is even more remarkable in a period characterized
by a difficult economic crisis and constant attacks by enemies
of the Revolution. Machado Ventura said that 45 percent of
the new party members are young people under 30 years of age.

Machado Ventura told journalists in the central province of
Camaguey that all Cubans will have access to debates on
documents to be presented at the Fifth Congress of the
Communist Party slated for next October.

CUBAN BOOKS ON DISPLAY IN LATIN AMERICA

Havana, April 28 (RHC)-- Cuban books are currently on display
at two international book fairs. In the Dominican Republic,
for the first time, Cuban books are being exhibited at its
Fourth Book Fair. In attendance were Cuba's Deputy Culture
Minister Carlos Marti, who held official talks with Dominican
cultural personalities and officials.

Meanwhile in Colombia, Cuban books are on display at the Cuban
Pavilion in Bogota. According to observers, the Cuban
Pavilion is receiving thousands of visitors interested in
purchasing posters of Ernesto Che Guevara and the music of
Silvio Rodriguez, Pablo Milanes, Benny More and Bola de Nieve.
The Cuban multimedia encyclopedia is also an attraction for a
large number of people attending the Bogota Book Fair.
