CUBAN FOREIGN MINISTER ROBERTO ROBAINA MEETS WITH VISITING
GRENADIAN PRIME MINISTER KEITH MITCHELL

Havana, April 22(RHC)-- Cuban Foreign Minister Roberto Robaina
met in Havana Tuesday with visiting Grenadian Prime Minister
Keith Mitchell. The Grenadian leader also met with Cuban
Minister of Foreign Trade Ricardo Cabrisas.

Speaking with journalists Tuesday afternoon, the Grenadian
prime minister described yesterday's talks with Cuban
President Fidel Castro as "very positive." Mitchell said the
talks concerned bilateral cooperation in the areas of public
health and tourism as well as Grenada's request for Cuban
assistance in constructing an international stadium. The
Grenadian prime minister also underscored Cuba's importance
within the Association of Caribbean States, of which Grenada
serves as General Secretary.

Last night, the Cuban president hosted a reception in honor of
the visiting Grenadian leader. This is the highest-ranking
delegation from Grenada to visit Cuba since the U.S.invasion
of that Caribbean island in October 1983.

UNICEF RECOGNIZES CUBA'S WORK FOR CHILDREN

Havana, April 22(RHC)-- According to the United Nations
International Children's Fund -- UNICEF -- Cuba ranks among
the top nations in best fulfilling agreements of the
Children's Summit.

UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy, who arrived on the
island Sunday, has been looking at the functioning of joint
programs and projects between Cuba and the U.N. body in the
central province of Sancti Spiritus, some 350 kilometers from
Havana. The UNICEF official said that the Cuba-UNICEF joint
project "For Life," which includes the building of rural
aqueducts, is "a total success."

In Sancti Spiritus, with nearly half a million inhabitants, 83
communities are incorporated into UNICEF projects which
benefit more than 80,000 people, including 7000 children.
This year, the province registered the island's highest health
indices. The infant mortality rate of Sancti Spiritus' 43
mountainous communities stands at zero, while the province
registered 7.1 deaths per one thousand live births in 1996.

In concluding her tour of Sancti Spiritus, UNICEF's executive
director told journalists that the achievements are the result
of joint actions by UNICEF and the Cuban government. UNICEF
has granted the island three million dollars worth of
donations this year.

TOBACCO HARVEST: SO FAR, SO GOOD

Havana, April 22(RHC)-- Cuba's agriculture authorities are
confident of bringing in a satisfactory tobacco harvest this
year. Agriculture Minister Alfredo Jordan said that
conditions are set for the island to fulfill export plans of
one hundred million cigars this year. According to Jordan,
the tobacco harvest is one of the agriculture ministry's
principal priorities. The Cuban agriculture minister
explained that the one hundred million production record has
been set on only seven occasions since the triumph of the
Cuban Revolution in 1959.

FRENCH ENTREPRENEUR ANTICIPATES A PROMISING FUTURE FOR TOURISM
IN CUBA

Havana, April 22(RHC)-- Cuba has emerged as a tourist power in
the Caribbean region. French business executive and Vice
President of the FRANCUBA joint venture, Michel Viland, told
journalists that a study conducted in the region revealed that
Cuba will be the country with the highest tourist development.
Viland said the study prompted his company to invest in the
island despite Washington's anti-Cuba Helms-Burton law that
seeks sanctions against companies and individuals doing
business in Cuba.

GERMANY'S BAYER PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY WILL SEND MEDICINES FOR
CUBAN CHILDREN

Havana, April 22(RHC)-- The prestigious German BAYER company
will distribute medicines in Cuba. BAYER -- working in Cuba
for fifty one years now -- will supply the island's pediatric
clinics and hospitals with eight high quality products
beginning in July. The German medical and pharmaceutical
company is participating at the 8th Health for All
International Fair underway in Havana.

Meanwhile, the English ROXTON firm has presented Cuban health
authorities with 20 electronic machines designed to eliminate
salt from water pipes. The donation -- valued at 50 thousand
dollars -- was presented by the Italian FARMAVENDA medical
company at the Health For All International Fair. The
kalkotronic devices will be installed in 20 pediatric
hospitals across the island.
