GRENADA'S PRIME MINISTER KEITH MITCHELL SLATED TO ARRIVE IN HAVANA
SATURDAY

Havana , April 18(RHC)-- The Cuban Foreign Ministry has announced that
Grenadian Prime Minister Keith Mitchell will be arriving in Havana
Saturday. The Caribbean leader's visit responds to an invitation by
Cuban President Fidel Castro. The Grenadian Health Minister and
business executives will be part of the official delegation.

According to a Foreign Ministry spokesperson, the two leaders will
discuss cooperation in the economic, healthcare and sports areas, and will
also exchange views on aspects related to the Association of Caribbean
States, currently chaired by Grenada.

This is the first visit of a Grenadian Prime Minister to Cuba since the
1983 US-led invasion of the island. The invasion came in the aftermath
of an internal conflict that took the life of the New Jewel Movement
leader and Prime Minister Maurice Bishop.

NORWAY AND CUBA FORMALIZE COOPERATION IN SPORTS AND CULTURE

Havana, April 18(RHC)-- Norway and Cuba have entered a new era
of bilateral relations with several agreements in culture and
sports. The Norwegian Minister of Culture and Sports, Turid
Birkeland, has ended a seven-day tour of the island where she
explored possibilities for expanding links between Oslo and
Havana.

Upon leaving Havana, the Norwegian minister said that the most
concrete result of her visit was the signing of a sports
agreement between Cuba and Norway and the Olympic Committees
of both countries. She added that there will also be an
exchange of athletics between Cuba and Norway.

CUBA AND VIETNAM EXCHANGE GOVERNMENTAL MISSIONS

Havana, April 18(RHC)-- Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister

island. Upon his arrival Thursday, the Vietnamese foreign
minister met with Cuba's Acting Foreign Minister Jorge
Bolanos. Official sources say the two government officials
met in Havana's Foreign Affairs Ministry where they discussed
international issues as well as topics of common interest.

Meanwhile, Cuban General Abelardo Colome Ibarra met in Vietnam
with Communist Party leader Du Muoi. General Colome Ibarra
arrived in Hanoi on Tuesday as part of an Asian tour of which
China was the first stop.

CUBAN RESEARCHERS CONTRIBUTE TO BOOK ON PREVENTIVE MEDICINE

Madrid, April 18(RHC)-- Cuban researchers' opinions on a
number of diseases are included in the book "AIDS, Cancer and
Parkinson's Disease: Breakthroughs in Preventions and Cures"
by German writer Haines Dietrich. The book came out recently
in Spain. Dietrich -- who is a sociology professor at the
Autonomous University of Mexico and an economist -- stated
that his book is the result of three years of interviews with
Cuban scientists.

Dietrich underscored Cuba's scientific progress in research on
diseases such as cancer and AIDS and emphasized that despite
current hardships, the island ranks among the nations with the
most physicians per inhabitants. In addition, Dietrich
pointed out that Cuban scientists are working on cures for
cholera, dengue fever and meningitis.

Haines Dietrich, author of 30 books on scientific and
sociological issues, asserted that Cuba's scientific
achievements are the result of free universal education and
health care.

MORE THAN 500 TEACHERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD ATTENDED
COURSES IN CUBA LAST YEAR

Havana, April 18(RHC)-- Cuba's prestigious educational system
is attracting the interest of an increasing number of foreign
teachers to the island. In 1996, more than 500 teachers from
all over the world attended seminars, workshops and courses in
Cuba. Havana's Pedagogical Convention Center hosts the
events. In statements to Radio Havana Cuba, the deputy
director of the Center, Ruben Seoane, said that earnings
obtained by these courses go to finance the sector. Seoane
said that last year's earnings went to refurbish the island's
pedagogical institutes.
